Welfare Hiring Questioned Amid Stagnant Aid Rolls
Alabama budget official James V. Jake Jordan told a Senate panel that welfare authorities have added workers each month this year even as relief rolls shrink. Officials from Pensions and Security argue higher caseloads require more staff, despite a hiring freeze. Jordan says an $18 million surplus allows maintaining current staff and a 5 percent pay raise with increased welfare benefits, without general fund appropriation. Also, an Athens boy injured in a bicycle crash near East Limestone Road is treated in Huntsville Hospital for a head wound. Jimmy L. Ashby drove the car involved. The Prestolite Co plant plans to modify its wastewater treatment plant, awaiting AWIC review in Montgomery.

Iron River helped Alabama move goods to rail and road
Decatur’s role as a distribution point traces to the Tennessee River ferry days. The two mile TC and DRR rail spur to Tuscumbia opened 144 years ago this Wednesday, birthing an iron river that bypassed dangerous shoals and fostered rail over water transport. The TC and DRR became the first railroad west of the Alleghenies, with Joliet-era events and key figures like Col. Sherrod shaping early line finance and expansion.
