Paul Stands For Long Tradition In Christianity
McNamara opposes House defense cuts as committee trims 2.0 billion from the defense budget for the year starting July 1. The panel says the plan preserves 2,695,000 active duty personnel and major weapons programs while saving pending costs. McNamara warns the reductions could cut forces by about 60,000 and affect air support for a combat division.

Supreme Court bans state forced Bible reading in public schools
Guest editorial notes an eight to one Supreme Court ruling that no state or subdivision may compel Bible reading or recitation of the Lord s Prayer in public schools. It upholds First Amendment separation of church and state, while allowing voluntary prayer and Bible reading. The piece argues belief in God remains foundational, with homes and churches as bulwarks of faith.

Filibuster Watch Delays 4 Cent Tax Boost in Senate
In Montgomery on June 21 AP reports a nervous Senate paused passage of a bill to lift the new four cent sales tax to July 1. Opponents talked long enough to force a weekend recess but no full scale filibuster emerged. An admin spokesman said foes would forego filibustering on resumption Tuesday. The measure, approved by the House, would advance the one cent sales tax increase previously set for Oct 1. A companion tax bill for use tax started in the Senate with little resistance and returns to the House for concurrence. The two bills would add five million dollars for the rest of the current fiscal year for schools. See NEW on Page 2.
