Partly cloudy weather continues for Alabama with scattered afternoon thundershowers. Tennessee sees scattered tonight with low 70s to 75, Friday cloudiness and thundershowers. Local items report hospital admissions and discharges, births, travel to lookouts, and church services with names and addresses of residents and facilities.
Three men were wounded by gunfire at the American Enka rayon plant in Morristown Tennessee during a shift change amid a strike by CIO Textile Workers Union Local 1054. A second burst of gunfire shattered windows as 60 to 75 armed pickets gathered outside. William McGinnis was critically wounded with head injuries, while Victor McDaniel and James McCanney sustained superficial wounds. State patrols rushed to restore order.
Brigadier General James P. S. Devereux retired said American commanders favored "garbage trucks and the like" over radar in Wake Island defense. He spoke at a Maryland Volunteer Air Force Reserve address as a candidate for Maryland's second district House seat stating the need to learn from past actions to prevent repetition.
At the 41st NAACP convention in Boston, leaders urged members to back pro civil rights candidates, including Rep. Helen Gahagan Douglas. They pressed for an end to segregation in housing and education and opposed use of federal funds to support segregation.

The deceased is Pfe Clifton Linder Pascagoula Mississippi. Injured Pvt Fred Green Jr Kings Tree South Carolina. Linder is survived by wife Lucile.

A 1948 Chevrolet auto transport slid off Highway 67 about 7:30 A M one half mile east of Somerville causing total destruction of the tractor section. Driver Orville H Boleman of Chamb Ga said loss of control occurred on a slick road. The transport belonged to Complete Auto Transit Dora Lille Ga.
The Decatur City Council voted to authorize Mayor H. R. Summer to sign a 20 year natural gas service and construction agreement with Alabama Tennessee Natural Gas. The contract caps initial daily supply at 2,865 MCF and rises to 4,300 MCF by year four, with delivery near the city limits and a 3 mile service radius. Construction and financing steps must be demonstrated within 90 days and distribution within 120 days.
William Calvin Bonds, 45, is held in Morgan County on a warrant charging grand larceny for allegedly stealing a 1948 DeSoto from E. G. Hamilton. He was returned from Birmingham by deputies and arrested within hours near the Alabama metropolis after the missing car report. No bond set. Other Sheriff arrests include reckless driving and driving while intoxicated.
