New York Stock Exchange Selected afternoon prices show a snapshot of price movements for major stocks. Investors monitor changes in key listings as market activity continues through the trading day.
Wall Street extended gains in active trading as profit taking trimmed some gains. NYSE volume for four hours reached 9.97 million shares versus 12.54 million Thursday, with American Telephone near flat to up a point and Ashland Oil up about 4.0. General Foods led gains over 3 points amid institutional demand, while Texas Gulf Sulphur fell about 2 points. Other blue chips including IBM and Xerox slipped, with several large firms down modestly.
NASD quotations reflect representative interdealer prices at about 10 a.m. Interdealer market moves during the day. Prices shown exclude retail markup markdown or commissions.
Decatur market notes include cotton loans at middling inch marking 21 26 and cottonseed at 40 dollars per ton. Milk prices list Grade A at 6 55 per hundred and manufactured milk at 3 20 per hundred for four per cent. Also shown are No 2 soybeans at 2 60 and miscellaneous No 2 values.
In Birmingham Alabama on March, egg prices to retailers per dozen mostly steady. Consumer Grade A white eggs show large 38 to 40 cents, mediums 29 to 35, smalls 20 to 25 as demand remains fair and supplies ample.
AP dispatches show live broilers and fryers in Atlanta with steady demand and varied farm prices. heavy hens in ample supply while light hens are scarce. In Birmingham demand for ready to cook poultry remains good with slaughter estimates around 1.26 million head, prices for U.S. Grade A and other grades listed, and market activity centered on dock deliveries for the week of June.
Nashville Tenn AP cattle and calves market shows no early arrivals and mixed changes from last week. Slaughter cattle steady, bulls up to 50, vealers weak, feeders unchanged. Hogs higher for barrows and gilts, sows up to 50, sheep not listed.
Dr. John D. Sherrill as surgical director of the Crippled Children's Clinic for 30 years died in a Birmingham hospital at 75. A native of Hartselle, he practiced medicine over 50 years, helped start an annual game linking city high schools for the clinic, served as physician for the Alabama football team, and was an honorary A Club member. Survivors include his widow, three sons Dr. Richard B. Sherrill Huntsville and Dr. John D. Sherrill Jr. and Jerry F. Sherrill of Birmingham, four daughters Mrs Holt Rast Jr. Mrs M Frank Flemming Mrs R Powell Thompson and Mrs Reed W. Webb of Jacksonville Fla. Services will be today.
The Decatur Model Airplane Club holds its annual radio controlled aircraft contest at Courtland Air Base this weekend with events Saturday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Flyers from across the country attend and the winner earns a spot on the U S team for the world championship in Russia this year.
