Ship Fracture Report Finds No Definitive Fix Yet
A House Merchant Marine subcommittee report on plate fractures in welded ships says no definite solution exists. It notes ongoing efforts, notes 11 lives lost in lifeboats, and cites eight fracture causes including welding practices, design detail, and low temperatures. As of Feb 29 1944, 2470 Liberty ships built had 91 serious and 124 potentially serious fractures, with five ships lost.
