Grateful Dead back in town for five Beacon shows

The Grateful Dead played five sold out shows at the Beacon Theater in New York turning the venue into a time warp. Fans, mostly teen males, packed the hall despite rowdy behavior as the tour revived the Dead after a long hiatus. The band toured with Garcia, Kreutzmann, Lesh, Hart, Weir and the Goochauxs, and resumed dates in Portland and Boston before Jersey City and Philadelphia, with tickets mostly restricted to fan club members. Monday’s show suggested the Dead still commands strong devotion.
