Counties Face Loss Of Education Funds In Alabama
Alabama counties face loss of state education funds under a 1969 law unless local effort meets the per pupil minimum. Jefferson and Calhoun exceed income averages, triggering higher local contributions, while 39 counties face penalties and some cities within counties are also affected. A pending bill would lessen penalties or count federal funds as local effort, with a list of deficient counties and shortfalls per pupil.
