Falkville Loses Beloved Citizen William H Drinkard
Services for William Harvey Drinkard known as Granddaddy will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Falkville Baptist Church where he was a deacon. He died Sunday at 6:15 a.m. at his home. A longtime Falkville resident since 1906 and former first postmaster of Lawrence Cove, Drinkard was born March 6, 1860 in Blount County. He was active Democrat in Morgan County politics and remembered as an old voter featured in a 1954 article with J. P. Walling. He voted for Gen Joe Wheeler in 1881 and Grover Cleveland in 1884, with Truman in 1952 bringing the ballot box from Falkville to Decatur. He taught near Eva from 1883 to 1887.

Jacksonville Police Chief Shot During Water Main Dispute
Police Chief E. F. Whiteside, 51, was fatally shot after going to a store with three water department workers to locate an old water main. Storekeeper Dentman opened fire as Whiteside attempted to search, dying after urging a protester to kill Dentman. Dentman surrendered to Sheriff Roy C. Snead.
