Senate Committee Approves ABC Board Reappointments
The Senate Rules Committee approved the reappointment of ABC Board Chairman Dewitt Reams of Mobile and Frank Potts of Florence with a 5-1 and 4-2 vote respectively, despite renewed charges of a large illicit liquor ring in dry northwest Alabama counties. The panel also backed James Caldwell of Brundidge for a third seat as confirmed by the Senate, amid political tension and questions about enforcement against bootleg activity. Oden cited threats and a Montgomery Advertiser report on an alleged payoff offer to derail Potts, while other legislators questioned the board’s alcohol enforcement and policy stance.
