Buckwheat serves as a good crop where corn has failed. Prepare ground by dishing or harrowing. Estimate local seeding time by planning 12 weeks of growth before the first killing frost.
Station Study of Fertilizer Plans
Alabama Experiment Station researchers study cotton fertilization to optimize timing and nutrient mix. They recommend applying phosphate and potash, plus one-quarter of nitrate before planting, with the remainder as a side dressing about 35 to 40 days after planting.

Demonstration on Cotton Fertilizer Use at Mr Peebles Farm
Mr Peebles applied 600 lbs superphosphate 300 lbs nitrate of soda and 75 lbs nitriate of potash per acre on five acres of cotton with one-fourth of the nitrate applied at planting and 225 lbs as a side dressing 35 to 40 days later. Six rows received only the base mix without nitrate of soda. Belue urges farmers to visit the Peebles farm to learn producing better cotton at lower cost per pound.

Best Time to Cut Oats Is When in Hard Dough Stage
The best time to cut oats is in the hard dough stage. Cutting earlier yields underfilled grain that shrivels and loses weight. If left until fully ripe, much of the crop shatters and is lost during harvest.
Harvest timing for sweet clover seed production
To get the best seed from a sweet clover crop harvest at about half the pods turning black. If enabling seeding of the first growth, stalks become tall and coarse and hard to handle. After grazing or a hay crop, the second growth is less coarse and seeds ripen more evenly.

Summer Hen Ration Tips for Laying Flocks
During summer, laying hens need mash to sustain egg production. Use about twice as much mash as scratch feed and add five pounds of linseed meal per 100 pounds of mash. Include milk in the summer ration and provide ample green feed to keep hens in good condition for molting.
Corn Production Not Up to Needs in Alabama
A 1924 to 1928 study shows Alabama farmers plant about three million acres of corn and harvest 14 bushels per acre, totaling 44 million bushels, far short of state needs by about 30 million bushels. The report argues nitrogen and nitrate of soda side-dressing can raise yields by 8 to 12 bushels per acre at a cost of about $4 per acre, suggesting a five acre demonstration on Bob Scott’s Tanner farm to compare yields with varying fertilization.
