Boll Weevil Crisis Described as Worst in Lawrence County
Sam P. McClendon told about 100 farmers and area businessmen that the boll weevil has brought the county cotton crop to a crisis, with 1949 values dropping from 1948 levels. He urged early purchase of poison, warned of scarce supplies, and warned against ineffective “Bug Catchers.” Eight dustings from July 10 to 15 were recommended, using BHC 35-40 or Tox kills, Kill-tone or similar poisons, with costs around $1.25 per application. He noted up to 15 applications may be needed if rains wash off poison. A county meeting followed by a film on feeding for profit and market discussions finished the night.
