Rights group plans meeting on Alabama party revolt
A statewide rights group in Alabama calls a Saturday session to mobilize a revolt within the Democratic party. Former officials Dixon and Goodwyn say telegrams went to 11 electors and 14 delegation members urging a civil rights plank and pledges to withhold Alabama electoral votes if Truman is renominated. The conference, at Jackson, Mississippi, and a July Birmingham meeting aim to select a slate aligned with the rights movement.
