Alabama hotelmen meet in Birmingham on Thursday and Friday for the annual State Hotel Association convention. W. A. Moffatt of Montgomery serves as association president.
Lawrenc e county deputies report arrest of Glenn Whisenant after a fatal gunfight at Owen Chapel church near Moulton. Deputy Dutton died. three others wounded, including Lorene Potter Bert Retherford and Bertha Perry. Wounds improve for several, with White still not fully recovered.
The HartselLe Morgan county show opened at Morgan County High School auditorium at 10 AM with Joe Wheeler EMC sponsoring. A cooking school session, "Cooking Electrically to Balance the Budget," was set for 2 PM, and another demo on "Entertaining Electrically" was planned for Friday. Men's night and prizes are featured, with "Baking At Its Best" on Saturday at 2 PM. Thelma Wilson directed the cooking school with four representatives from Joe Wheeler EMC to advise on equipment cost and energy use for home and farm.
The Etheredge family of Town Creek mourns two losses in one month as Wells Etheredge, five, dies following mastoid operation at Colbert County Hospital. The funeral follows the May 17 burial of Leon Etheredge, drowned when a boat overturned on the Tennessee River. Rev. R. L. Franklin officiates. Wells is survived by his mother, brother C. J., and sisters Betty Ann and Willhelh. Highsmith of Moulton directed.
A crowd of strike sympathizers attacked three Kansas City hotels injuring one officer and arresting three as police with tear gas dispersed about 2,000 demonstrators after a mass meeting at union headquarters. About 40 windows were broken in the Muehlebach and adjacent hotels during the announcement.
Birmingham reports a string of mishaps and near misses across Alabama. A 12 year old boy fell into a 90 foot well but was saved after his mother lowered a bucket to lift him to safety. Others escaped from river and rock hazards while a roadside collapse injured a man. A boy captured a poisonous moccasin in a bottle and a domestic egg mishap ends with no bite from a dog.
The Tennessee river fell to 21 feet with a 90 degree high and 70 degree low in the past 24 hours ending 7 a.m. Today there was a trace of rain. Alabama sees partly cloudy skies with showers in the extreme north and local thundershowers tonight. Tennessee expects local showers tonight and Thursday with little temperature change.
Judge W W Callahan set trials next week for five capital cases. Robert Morgan faces second degree murder in the shotgun slaying of neighbor William Martin on April 24. Jim Orr is charged with murder in the Jan 13 hold up slaying of Warren White. J Mullins to stand trial for killing Ed McDermott in self defense March 30. Laneece Smith faces murder tied to the Nov 1 1935 shooting of Dan Dring. John Thomas Black and Robert Gill scheduled for trials June 23 on murder and burglary respectively.
J H Sims of Union Springs is named probate judge for Bullock County by Governor Bibb Graves, succeeding the late W E McNair. Sims resigns as tax assessor. R L Hobdy, former state tax agent for Bullock and Russell counties, succeeds him.
Dr. W. H. Anderson, a well known local physician, asserts there is no race death by own action on his farm near the city. Twin calves were born there, followed by twin jacks, and this week the wife of the stock caretaker, a Black woman, gave birth to twin sons, prompting his quip that should be enough.
Governor Bibb Graves asked the Alabama Supreme Court for an advisory opinion on the validity and effective date of the $2000 homestead tax exemption act. A dispute with Attorney General A A Carmichael centered on whether taxes are due Oct 1 1987 or Oct 1 1988. The measure exempts owner occupied homesteads from state ad valorem tax up to $2000 in valuation. City and county taxes are unaffected.
Beginning Monday at 2 p m DeLano Park opens for the WPA city summer program under supervision of WPA personnel. Two caretakers Marshall Lemley and William Kincaid will staff daily 2 to 6 except weekends. Activities will include crafts music sports and stories for all ages. A park council of local club members will be formed. The Oil Works Administration spent nearly 30000 beautifying the area constructing buildings playgrounds and stands.
Curtis Hawkins, 67, longtime agent for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad in Evergreen, retires after 49 years of service. His family has deep rail background, with grandfather Jeremiah Hawkins immigrating from Birmingham, England in 1858 to build railroad shops in Alabama.
Morgan county tax assessor John M. Maxwell convenes 13 North Alabama counties to study the homestead exemption act. Attendees will review administration plans and opinions from Attorney General Carmichael as they clarify exemptions up to $2,000 and state only portions.
Mutinous sailors on the Spanish destroyer Ciscar directed gunfire toward a French sloop at La Pallice harbor. French and British warships faced the Ciscar as 116 Bilbao refugees remained aboard seeking landing assistance from the Spanish consul at La Rochelle.

John H. Peach a Decatur attorney emerged in discussions as a potential Alabama lieutenant governor candidate. He formerly served as legal advisor to Governor B. M. Miller and later practiced law in the Tri-Cities and Decatur. Supporters say his legal ability and popularity could make him a strong statewide contender.
Records from the Alabama Unemployment Compensation Commission show the unemployment trust fund at 4 199 609 dollars. About 500 000 dollars more was held in escrow in state and federal courts and will be paid into the fund soon.
