President Coolidge telegrammed Hoover praising his nomination as secretary of commerce and urging duty. Mrs Coolidge greeted by Irvine Lenroot with roses as they toured Superior Wisconsin with a public school band playing. The party planned a train ride toward Cedar Island Lodge on the Brule river and spaced rest stops for Mrs Coolidge.
Herbert Hoover secured the Republican presidential nomination on the first ballot at the 1928 convention with 837 of 1084 votes. The anti Hoover forces collapsed as Frank Lowden withdrew, delegates shifted, and a president placing vice president pick loomed for today.
At the Republican National Convention Herbert Hoover was named president and Senator Charles Curtis of Kansas was chosen as his running mate. Curtis, of Indian descent and former jockey, drew strong cross‑country support. Dawes and other candidates received minor votes.
LIVINGSTON Alabama June 15 AP D A McDonald a prosperous farmer was found not guilty of murder of his wife by a jury in circuit court. He was charged with shooting her as she slept her body found March 1 near the McDonald home clothed only in night clothes. The defense claimed she wandered in her sleep and was killed by a passing motorist.
W. L. Crawford of Prospect Park Homesite in Decatur predicts a weather break will lift the local property market. He expects improved conditions and a likely June rain spell to end the rainy season, boosting buyer activity in the newest subdivision.
Secretary Hoover was selected on the first ballot at the Kansas City Republican convention as the presidential candidate. He defeated a united opposition with an overwhelming vote late Thursday night.

Following the Republicans in Kansas City, attention turns to the Democratic convention in Houston. The gathering starts June 26 with nominations and balloting expected about two days later.
In reaction to wet weather that hurt cotton yields, several farmers in the area have increased tomato acreage to supply the Decatur canning plant.

City Attorney W. W. Callahan says Decatur cannot district the city or alter wards without proper timing for a census. The Municipal Paving Co awarded contracts for paving Alabama Street, repairing Second Avenue, and building sidewalks along Alabama Street to the Tennessee River bridge approach. E. J. Kirkpatrick Co. gets storm and sanitary sewer work nearby. Concrete seven inch paving approved. total costs recorded and slated to start immediately. Public utilities told to prep. aim to minimize street digging by coordinating repairs prior to paving.
The will of Wiley B Robertson was probated today before the probate court with Leon L Robinson and Wint V Lovelady as subscribing witnesses to the will.
Charles Limpy Cleaver charged with mail robbery survived a gun battle with police after escaping Wheaton county jail with four others in a $133,000 Evergreen Park heist. Lieutenant Barry of the detective bureau was wounded, as Cleaver and accomplice Farina were hit multiple times. Farina was mortally wounded and later died while Cleaver’s condition improved.
Nobile and five Italia survivors drift on an ice floe near land at King’s Bay. Injuries and a broken leg hinder escape while frostbite and snow blindness prompt requests for medicine boots and spectacles as polar bears prowl nearby.
About ten places remain for boys aged 11 to 18 to attend the Ki-Y camp near Vinemont for the second week of the three week session. Applications are at the Y M C A and must be made promptly as the caravan departs Monday morning from the Y building. The camp provides all conveniences and safety measures offering boys a full week of outdoor life.
C. J. Hayden, once a railroad horticultural agent for the Louisville and Nashville line, and now a prominent Limestone County farmer, was a visitor here yesterday.
Kansas City reporters note Senator Charles Curtis of Kansas leading as the Republican convention opens to name Herbert Hoover's running mate. New York and Pennsylvania backing solidified, boosting Curtis toward an early ballot nomination.
A city bridge celebration committee reports fixtures for the White Way Keller Memorial Bridge have been purchased. The county covers one third of the cost while two thirds come from remaining bridge fund. A. G. Patterson directed W. Fussell to issue payment after committee approval. The funds are intended to cover completion expenses of the bridge.
