A two-truck collision a mile north of Decatur injured Russell South, 39, of Hillsboro. He drives a 1956 GMC dump truck loaded with gravel and was hospitalized at Decatur General Hospital in stable condition. James Elbert Shelton, 44, of Pulaski, Tennessee, drove the other loaded vehicle. The accident occurred at 2 15 p m on Highway 31 near Keller Memorial Bridge and blocked traffic for about four hours until a prison camp crew cleared the wreckage.
A canvas-covered Army truck from the 101st Pentomic Airborne Division careened off a bridge at Fort Campbell Kentucky and landed upside down in a creek killing 14 paratroopers and injuring nine others. Troops were returning to barracks after field training when the 2 ½- ton vehicle veered across a gravel road and struck the rail. Helicopters evacuated the injured and authorities said survivors are expected to live.
Robert Glass 20 died from shotgun wounds after an argument with neighbor George Wiggins. Wiggins is jailed pending investigation. Police say the shooting occurred at 8:39 pm on the Alma and Sykes street intersection where the two families lived close by.
Rumors of a new anticancer drug sent Olin Mathieson Chemical Corp stock to a 1957 high of 58.50 on the New York Exchange before the firms disclosed the compound is still in infancy clinically. They termed it a palliative and cautioned against premature conclusions about its effectiveness.
Charles D. Smith, longtime Decatur High assistant coach and Austinville native, was named principal of Austinville High School by the Morgan County board of education. The board also approved ten new teachers and authorized a five and one half mill ad valorem tax election in Union Hill.
The House plans a showdown session on civil rights with proponents predicting passage before nightfall. A key fight is a possible Southern amendment to guarantee jury trials for those accused of violating federal civil rights injunctions.
A 4 30 p m parade will begin in front of Gordon Bibb Elementary School and travel along Second Avenue Lee Street Bank Street forming the Cotton Week observance. Alabama Maid of Cotton Miss Sandra Kelley of Huntsville will crown the Morgan County county maid at 7 30 p m in Decatur High School stadium. Twelve contestants ride in convertibles as three bands from Decatur High School Lakeside High and Morgan County High participate. Miss Marguerite Livingston who qualified yesterday will not enter this year.
Secretary of the Treasury Humphrey told a Senate House Economic subcommittee that a tax cut this year is absolutely out of the question and it would be idle to speculate on 1958 prospects. He said no plans exist to recommend a tax reduction next year and warned government finances must show a surplus before any large auction.
Tennessee River reading at Keller Memorial Bridge this morning was 21.51 feet, down .08 in 24 hours. High yesterday 93 degrees, low 73. At 12 15 p.m. today it was 90. Forecast calls for partly cloudy hot conditions with scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Winds south to southwest 12 to 8 mph today and 5 to 10 mph tonight. High today 92, tonight 72, high Saturday 93.
Temperatures run 1 to 3 degrees above normal with highs near 85 to 92 and lows around 65 to 75. Precipitation ranges from moderate to locally heavy, with scattered afternoon and evening showers and isolated thunderstorms through most of the period.
Mrs Emma Buhl De Hart, a frail 90 year old who lived in a fire damaged apartment, died after months of malnutrition and illness. Police say her fortune of nearly $500000 was largely hidden under her bed. The case reveals a quiet heiress who lived simply on 15 cent hotdogs.
Chief Justice Arthur T. Vanderbilt of New Jersey collapsed at a rail station and was rushed to Overlook Hospital in Summit. The hospital said he suffered a stroke and was in critical condition. He remained unconscious about 30 minutes, then regained partial consciousness. He will be 72 on July 7.
In Port au Prince Haiti the Provisional President Daniel Fignole regime was toppled in a military coup the fifth government to fall since last December The army led by Brig Gen Antonio Rebreau dismissed Fignole and the cabinet and announced army control of all governmental powers Fignole and ministers reportedly arrested and whereabouts unknown
In New York, Billy Graham's Madison Avenue crusade draws thousands while nearby taverns report a slack season. Bartenders and managers note empty stools, layoffs, and few patrons as Graham preaches nightly about conversion and salvation. The crusade claims 17 470 decisions for Christ, many likely joining existing city churches.
West Asia report shows Gamal Abdel Nasser's pan Arab leadership is waning among Arab rulers though his pull with masses remains strong. Saudi Arabia and Jordan fear his influence and seek to preserve Arab unity while avoiding direct confrontation. Amman communique pledges cleaner relations and cooperation rather than open axis against him.
Harold Stassen, U N disarmament delegate for the United States, returned to London from Washington after talks with Secretary of State Dulles and others. He said powers are nearer to a first step agreement than at any time in 11 years, though several major problems remain. The first step is described as the most difficult. See MAKING On Page 2.
The Senate voted 49 to 40 to reject a proposal to slash funding from the foreign aid bill totaling 3.6 billion dollars. Earlier, a 55 to 34 vote rejected limiting defense support abroad to the fiscal year beginning July 1. The Alabama State Docks invited competitive bids for a new bare dock on the Tennessee River at Huntsville costing about 250000 dollars.
