Doctors Probe Acupuncture Use in Hospitals
U S doctors urge medical schools in the state to study acupuncture and caution the public against false hopes and premature use. The American Society of Anesthesiology warns that severe mental trauma could result from indiscriminate application and calls for psychological evaluation of patients. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Washington Alaska cites lack of scientific information in delaying coverage. Proponents cite anesthesia benefits and shorter convalescence, while noting China has used acupuncture in hundreds of thousands of operations since 1966.
