Superintendent Curtis P. Sellers Named Decatur Schools Leader
Curtis P. Sellers 37 of Huntsville, an Outstanding Young Educator in Alabama in 1965, was named Wednesday as superintendent of the Decatur City Schools effective July 1. He currently serves as assistant superintendent for general administration in Huntsville and will earn about $19,000 yearly with a car. The Decatur Board selected him from about 20 candidates. H. R. Leeman retires next month with $17,400 and a car. Sellers, a native of Eutaw, holds a doctorate in school administration and curriculum development earned in 1967, a 1964 AA certificate from the University of Alabama, and a 1960 master’s in secondary education. He is married to Dottie Sue Rushing and they have a daughter, Nina Christine. He plans to move to Decatur after selling their house. He is active in multiple education and community groups and previously served as principal of Davis Hills School in Huntsville.

House panel backs surtax extension for low income families
The House Ways and Means Committee tentatively approved a 12 month extension of the surcharge that would remove about two million low income families from the tax rolls. The plan includes a $1100 deduction for those at or below the poverty line and would cost about $660 million annually.
