Lawrence County High School faces a leadership crisis as Principal J E Stephens resigns two years after replacing J K Howell. Stephens has offers from three other districts and his contract runs to July 1. Board President Prince Chenault says no meeting is planned but a session seems likely. Clyde G Horton, superintendent, leaves office July 1 and was unavailable for comment.
WMSL-TV and Tennessee Valley Radio and Television Corp seek FCC approval to raise broadcast power by 12 percent to 189000 watts to cover the Tennessee Valley and Southern Tennessee with snow free pictures. Frank Whisenant says work will start after permission, costing about 75000 dollars with completion aimed for September. Two tubes for the new drive cost about 4500 dollars and only minor antenna changes are planned.
A monster Atlas missile exploded shortly after launch at Cape Canaveral. Thousands watched as the two mile ascent ended in failure while Air Force officials avoided confirming the model and detailed causes. Convair and General Electric represented the project amid tight information.

The U S Department of Agriculture announced premiums and discounts for 1957 upland cotton under the Cotton Price Support Program. The Commodity Credit Corp will offer price support loans in early harvesting areas before August 1 1957 at 28.15 cents per pound gross weight Middling 13 inch. Loans available through banks and CCC direct until April 30 1958 or earlier on demand. Loans secured by cotton stored in CCC approved warehouses or ASC approved farm storage.
Mayflower II towed into Provincetown harbor after 53 day voyage from Plymouth England. Skipper Alan Villiers steered far south to catch favorable winds and currents to reach Race Point. Thousands watched as the replica frigate with no sails zigzagged and was moored by the Yankton hawser.
Morgan County farmers who exceed their 1957 cotton allotment and fail to dispose of the excess within 20 days of the original notice will lose government price support on all cotton from the farm.
