In Miami a 19 year old Black man was arrested for refusing to move to the rear of a segregated Miami Transit Co bus, signaling a potential early test of the city’s segregation law. NAACP organizer Rudolph Reid was also arrested for alleged breach of peace and released on $500 bond as a bus boycott looms.
Horace Obie Lott aged 40 and Charles Powell Tuck aged 48 were sentenced to two years at the Public Health Hospital in Lexington Kentucky for narcotics trafficking. The sentences were handed down in Birmingham by Federal Judge H. H. Hobart Grooms. Governor James E. Folsom stated McFarland remains legally employed as State Docks Director despite public criticism.
In Geneva, Switzerland the Communist Chinese government asks that arrangements be completed within the next month for a meeting between Secretary of State John J. Dulles and Premier Chou En Lai.

Wheeler said a thorough investigation was launched with authorities and continues.
A 31-year-old woman who leaped from a third floor window onto the roof of a lower floor was hospitalized in fair condition in North Broward General Hospital. About 20 minutes later she gave birth to a 10-pound boy in reportedly fine condition. Medical staff noted skull lacerations and other bruises from the fall.

Mayor H R Summer announced appointment of two planning commission members. L E Stone of Chemstrand Corp Decatur and James Colvard of Hall and Colvard Architects were named to the board. L L McCulloch was elected vice chairman. A rezoning request along Vine Street near 6th Avenue NE was tabled for study. A 10 acre Brookmead Road subdivision sketch for Elbert Blackwell was approved.
Henry Russell Speake 65, a Decatur real estate man, died this morning at Decatur General Hospital after a heart attack at his home 312 Lafayette St NE. He had a long heart ailment but remained active in business. Funeral at First Baptist Church to be held Wednesday at 2:30, with Rev. W. K. school officiating. He was the youngest of 11 children and partnered with Web Speake and J. L. Lee Russell.
The Decatur Little League season opened with the Giants defeating the Braves 19 to 8 and the Red Sox beating the Yankees. Charles Terry pitched for the Giants, Bob Harpe took the loss for the Braves, Johnnie McDoura won for the Red Sox, and Billy Stephenson lost for the Yankees. Tonight the Tigers meet the Indians and the Dodgers face the Cubs.

An elderly Baileyton man R. S. Lowe was seriously injured when struck by a northbound 1949 Chevrolet driven by Harold Posey 22 of 321 Moulton St SE as he crossed 6th Ave near Sherman St SE. Lowe, with a fractured skull and broken legs, was taken to Decatur Hospital then University Hospital Birmingham. No charges were filed.
Washington conferees held their first session on a giant highway construction bill with sharp disputes expected over how funds are divided among states. Rep McGregor Ohio predicted no quick solution while Sen Gore Tennessee hoped to pass the measure before July 1 when higher highway allotments take effect.

Five people died when a light plane crashed into a ridge near Anchorage. Captain E G Head was the pilot and Mrs Head was traveling to visit her son and family. On board were W Kenneth Tanner and George Hogue of Birmingham and Mrs Hess of Dallas, all killed. The Rev Johnson, pastor of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, and Mrs Johnson are among the deceased's relatives.
An Air Force helicopter reached the scene after search crews spotted the burned and scattered wreckage of the plane about 100 feet from the top of a high ridge east of Anchorage.
