Good Stand and Nitrate Timing for Cotton Yields
A Cotton guidance note from Limestone emphasizes the need for a good stand, warning that missing hills reduce seed cotton yield by 250 to 300 pounds per acre. It recommends two to three stalks per 12 to 18 inches, warns against thinning at chopping, and urges leaving stalks. For nitrate of soda in corn, the Alabama Experiment Station finds the best returns from one fourth at planting and three fourths as a side dressing after chopping, applied early before squares form. It cautions waiting until blooms or later reduces seed cotton per ton of soda and advises a single early application.
