Weather outlook shows a mild day with scattered thundershowers in North and Central areas and light southerly winds along the coast. Local items report enlistments for the Army Air Corps and First Cavalry, hospital admissions and transfers, church activities, and a payroll distribution for the National Guard.
Budapest reports a communist claim that a letter from Dean Acheson promised U S support to Ferenc Nagy before the Truman Doctrine. Jozsef Revai wrote in Szabadsag that Nagy sought aid to apply the doctrine in Hungary. Parliament convened as Premier Dinnyes outlined post coup policies.
President Truman crossed the border to Canada on a goodwill mission aboard an 11 car special train. He greeted officials at Rouses Point and, with wife Bess and daughter Margaret, prepared for a three day stay in Ottawa to address Parliament. The trip comes as Congress sent tax and union bill changes to the White House, which he planned to study after the visit.
The Alabama House approved a series of measures to abolish token sales tax with a tiered payment plan starting October 1. The Senate backed expansion of Auburn and Alabama football stadiums to 50,000 seats after loans up to 1 million dollars. A liquor referendum bill and housing, insurance, and fishing measures were also discussed along with penalties for drunk driving and bad checks.
Stoppages in 20 soft coal mines employing 11,204 workers spread across Fayette Green and Washington counties in Southwestern Pennsylvania as AFL United Mine Workers weigh strategy. Two mines, Gates and Kyle of H C Frick Coke Co, resumed after weekend idle time, accounting for 5 600 tons daily.
Yugoslavia disclosed a Bulgarian military mission in Belgrade and a Czechoslovak mission planned for Tito's capital as Balkan talks widen. Petru Groza dismissed talk of a Balkan federation while signaling growing Yugoslav Romanian cooperation and cultural ties. Hungarian parliament was summoned amid anti communist tensions. Douglas Chandler testified in federal court that he broadcast to defend his country from war horrors. FBI agent Dunn said Chandler dictated a 48 page statement detailing trips to Berlin in 1941 and talks with German radio officials. The statement claimed broadcasting was his imperative duty and noted his wife’s diary entry of thanks.
Rome papers mark the seventh anniversary with scarce coverage. Only L Oro D Italia gave a half column titled June 10 to the event, while 14 other Rome newspapers passed without mention of the declaration.
A House appropriations subcommittee heard a plea to expedite the Coosa-Alabama to Tennessee waterway linking Northwest Georgia to Mobile. Rep. Rains praised the project as a major rivers and harbors item and a world power potential second only to the Columbia and Mississippi systems. Alabama lawmakers, including Sparkman and Grant, voiced support along with other representatives. No funds have been allotted for the Tennessee Tombigbee waterway.
In San Francisco a Board of immigration officials ruled that Martha Kaelin may enter as an American citizen but her daughters Yuriko Katrina and Fusa Marieli must stay in an alien detention ward pending further action. Neither daughter recalls a Japanese father, his whereabouts are unknown, and the parents separated when the girls were young.
Eleven nation Far Eastern Commission rules that modern Japanese plants and equipment must be removed to disarm Japan and break up Zaibatsu while considering Japan's peacetime economy needs.
President Truman's plan to merge housing activities faced a setback as the special committee voted 11 to 3 to urge Congress to block the plan within 60 days from May 27. The House Banking Committee meanwhile advanced sugar rationing repeal for households but kept it for big industrial users. Secretary Marshall urged more State Department funding, arguing brisk foreign relations justify larger operations.
Senator Reed hopes the senate will pass by mid week a bill to exempt railroads from anti trust laws for rate making. The measure would require Interstate Commerce Commission approval of any rate agreements. Opponents led by Senator Russell say it effectively eliminates the anti trust laws for railroads. Russell held the floor for about three and a half hours yesterday before a recess.
Italian police aided by British agents arrested 12 persons in Genoa harbor and slums amid a search for suspects in the murder by mail plot. Several prominent Britons received letter bombs from Italy last week.
Moscow reports the Soviet president issued decrees detailing what constitutes a state secret and penalties up to 20 years in a labor camp. Categories include military, economic, non military discoveries, and a broad miscellaneous class with subpoints on foreign relations and ciphered correspondence.
Wheeler Lake Yacht Club members vote to offer about $1,000 in prize money for boat races on Saturday August 30. Discussion covered harbor improvements across the river from Decatur, expanded dock space, floating slips, flood lighting and 24 hour duty at the harbor. John McCord and John Crawford outlined plans for improvements at the Disco site and preparations are led by Marvi Penney. American Power Boat Association sanctioning was received for the races.
James L Rankin announced the Decatur Country Club pool will be supervised by a life guard at all times. Emens the senior lifeguard with two years experience at Camp Westmoreland has accepted the post. Hours of opening will be announced Wednesday after a board meeting.
Floodwaters in eastern Missouri and west central Illinois neared a peak with over 20 000 homeless and about 50 000 acres flooded. Rivermen and engineers warned further rains could worsen conditions while Red Cross and Army engineers manned the effort across towns including Alexandria Hannibal Canton Quincy and Boonville.
Lions Club chair Sam H. Wheat outlined plans for the 1947 Tennessee Valley Horse Show to be held July 31 with blue ribbons and $1570 in prizes. Gillie Orr will announce, Ed Stalcup of Franklin will judge, Bert Hunter and Dew Wh Andean named as judges, assisted by Milton Easter of Athens.
Police Chief J. B. Whitmire reports two motorists were fined $1 each for parking violations as the one and two hour parking law is now enforced in business districts. Visitors to De Soto who are not familiar with the rule receive courtesy cards from the department.
Two killed as a specially equipped BT-13 plane used in malaria control for the Tennessee Valley Authority crashes near Guntersville Lake. Pilot C Durham of Knoxville and foreman T Hodges of Woodsville, Ala., died. Plane based Scottsboro on first morning dusting flight. Central News Agency reports Outer Mongolian troops aided by four Soviet warplanes crossed into Sinkiang, penetrating over 200 miles and clashing with native forces. Dispatches claim Chinese towns and civilians were bombed as fighting continued, with minimal native Chinese garrison forces observed.
