Secretary Hillis told Provident Taft supporters Roosevelt trails 677 to 466 with La Follette and Cummins far behind. Roosevelt followers plan to press contests, seek a minority report, and trigger a separate convention if overruled. Taft camp braces for maneuvers to control credentials.
Chicago June 10 Taft leaders emphasized control of the National Committee after Knight forced a Fourth Ohio District contest. Roosevelt forces won a concession for uncontested delegates by roll call. California row centered on direct primary law and the state’s delegation. Friction over a “steam roller” label sparked protests as Indiana and Arizona contests followed.
The preliminary hearing for Frank Scheurman, accused in the May 20 killing of John Henry, will be held in Athens, Alabama tomorrow morning before Justice J. J. Turrentine. The hearing was continued three times at the state's request and bond may be granted or the state will proceed.
Attorney John E. Perry filed an affidavit supplementing impeachment charges against Judge Hanford. The document accuses Hanford of misconduct describing him as a judicial pervert and a pure bankrupt and claims nine specifications detailing alleged abuses.

A Decatur citizen asserts the Decatur post office will unlikely advance from fourth to second class on July 1 due to the four full quarters rule. He notes the office was reduced to fourth class and four quarters have not yet elapsed, making an upgrade improbable under the law.
From Key West this morning Onterhouse sails as the Cuban crisis draws attention. He will land American marines in Havana at once if authorities require decisive action to halt street fighting.
After a two week adjournment the Morgan County L and Equity Court opened at 10 and sprang into jury organization. About fifty to seventy five cases were scheduled for trial, mostly minor offenses from drunkenness to assault with a weapon.
Des Moines reports twelve people found dead in J. B. Moore home. Victims include Moore and his wife, eight children, and two visitors. All died by axe while asleep in three rooms. no struggle evident, motive unknown. White victims. murderer not found.
At a meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Ladies Benevolent Society the group chose the Benevolent Society Hospital name for the proposed hospital. The drive raised about 10,000 in ten days with ongoing appeals to Decatur citizens. Several architects are drawing plans for a 30000 building with expandable later additions and a contract will be issued once a plan is finalized.
Work began today on the Echols Hotel addition, about forty rooms with running water, plus twenty five rooms with private baths. The old section will be remodeled to match the new wing, and occupancy is expected by late October. Owner W. H. Driskill plans a extended trip nearby after the changes.
Large crowd sees exquisite films featuring Sarah Bernhardt in Camille and Rejane in Sans Gene at the Masonic. Reviewers praise Bernhardt as her strongest character portrayal and note the French company delivering superb moving pictures with a special machine operator and manager on site.
Work starts on the Moulton pike survey from the Morgan County line to Moulton the Lawrence county seat. The county previously approved a 123000 bond for road improvements and grading is planned, aiming to complete the 25 mile pike from Decatur to Lawrence by late fall. Morgan county projects will use county prisoners to assist once another pike project finishes.
The Delite today donates half its proceeds to the Hospital Fund and the Star will follow tomorrow. Both theaters promise good pictures and entertainment while aiding the hospital fund.

Habeas corpus proceedings for Sam M. Winton a notable New Decatur merchant seek to escape a five day jail term and a $50 fine for alleged contempt of court. Judge D W Speaker presided with state attorneys E W Godbey A Lynne and Samuel Blackwell and defense counsel W W Callahan O Kyle Coleman Peck narrating amendments and legal questions about jurisdiction and proper remedy. The hearing adjourned to 1:30 PM with Judge Kyle presenting key authorities on contempt and free press defenses as Callahan continued arguing the case.
The First Man church in Decatur ended a week of revival led by Dr J A Bryan of Birmingham. About 15 additions and many reconsecrations were recorded. Bryan urged acceptance of Christ and Christian renewal as a large congregation listened. He left at 6 o clock this morning for his Birmingham home.
Rain is expected tonight and Tuesday with showers easing by midday. The unsettled pattern continues across the region as coastal low pressure moves in, bringing cooler temperatures and gusty winds.
