Athens Youth Loses Leg In Sawmill Mishap
A 17 year old Athens youth fell into a whirling sawmill blade at the Albert Wessler sawmill two miles west of Coffee Pot, losing his right leg below the knee. James Harold Wallace remained in Athens Limestone Hospital with the accident occurring Friday afternoon. His father Press Wallace said the boy was reaching for a plank when he slipped into the conveyor and was thrown several feet. The saw cut up the leg from the ankle, leaving only a skin thin layer.

Killer Of Birmham Principal Sought
Birmingham police investigate the stabbing death of 49 year old William V. Long principal of Dupuy Elementary. Long was found near his car outside a drive-in restaurant after last being seen at a nearby event. He suffered multiple stab wounds including to the head throat and stomach with the motive not yet known.

Storm Jumping Gun On Hurricane Season
A tropical disturbance moved from the Gulf coast inland to bring heavy rain but only 5 to 10 mph winds near Miami. Forecaster Gilbert Clark said wind damage is unlikely and the system may strengthen into a tropical storm or hurricane by tomorrow. The hurricane season opens June 15.

Limestone lawmakers eye more salary hike bills
Athens Limestone Rep James Dement said bills may be introduced this session to raise salaries for county officials. He and Limestone Lauderdale Sen Milton Grisham study drafted measures to boost the pay of the county judge and county superintendent of education, possibly others. City Hall adopts three audit recommendations from Downs & Box
Decatur city council voted unanimously to implement three conclusions from a special audit by Downs & Box. A three year old girl Susan Gilbert was struck by a 1953 Chevrolet in front of her home on Sherman Street SE at 12 44 PM and was admitted in fair condition to University Hospital Birmingham. Driver Jimmie Ann Plant McBride 19 of Sherman Street was named. Witness Sandra Smith said the child ran into the street from between parked cars. No charges were filed.
