Appeals Court Asked To Strike Down Alabama Death Penalty Law
Attorneys for two brothers convicted in the 1976 Blount County murder urge the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals to void the new death penalty statute as "freakish and arbitrary." They contend it makes the penalty mandatory and burdens judges with overturning juries. State officials defend the law as advisory with mitigations. Six inmates sit on Alabama's death row under this or older statutes.
