Sloan Testifies He Feared Retribution in Watergate Inquiry
Former Nixon campaign treasurer Hugh J Sloan Jr testified at the Senate Watergate hearings that he feared administration retribution after truthfully detailing wiretapping. He described meeting H R Haldeman who promised no obstruction to private employment, yet noted Jeb Magruder’s $36 000 a year Commerce Department post. Sloan said he felt reassured then distressed when Magruder obtained the policy post. He added he does not believe Maurice H Stans was involved in illegal activities, saying he thought Stans was left holding the bag. Sloan sought a White House meeting for private work and said Watergate appeared to have been handled with seven men convicted or pleading guilty.
