Chicago union official testified he deposited about 9000 of union funds into his savings account on orders from his boss but did not keep the money. Anthony Conforti said the move was strange yet followed orders from George Stuart regarding a 10500 fund raised for negotiating a contract with Saler no-Megowen Biscuit Co.
Today commemorates the 13th anniversary of D Day with Allied forces storming the Normandy beaches. The assault began at 6 30 am Greenwich time, with LSTs offshore and 1 000 aircraft dropping paratroopers as troops crossed the English Channel.

Nobel laureate Linus Pauling is subpoenaed by the Senate Internal Security subcommittee to testify at a June 18 public hearing. Pauling, head of biochemistry at Caltech, Pasadena, is among scientists warning of radioactivity fallout from H-bomb tests as the committee seeks possible Communist involvement in anti testing campaigns.
Three states brace for fresh flood crests as the Red River surges to its highest level in a decade. Denison Dam at Lake Texoma shows three feet of water over the spillway while the Army Corps of Engineers raises discharges to manage downstream torrents. Lake levels and surrounding resort areas face inundation as engineers consider further increases to keep levels near present figures.
Washington reports the Army claims a completely successful Jupiter guided missile test paving the way to enter the earth satellite program. A scientist says the Jupiter could launch a 200 pound satellite, with earlier tests reaching 1,650 miles over the Atlantic in about 28 minutes. Horace T. Ward, a 27 year old Negro student at Northwestern University, abandons a seven year effort to enter the all white University of Georgia law school. Atlanta attorney A. T. Walden, Ward’s counsel since 1952, announced the suit would be dropped. Ward filed his application in 1950.
New York grandpa Harry Truman and grandma Bess are en route to Doctors Hospital to meet their new grandson born to Margaret Truman and Clifton Daniel by Caesarean section. The full term baby and mother are reported doing fine. The beaming grandfather pegs the child for a Senate career in a brief St. Louis stopover.
A federal judge refused to order William Girard brought to this court but set a Tuesday hearing on a suit to bar trial of Girard by a Japanese court. The judge also ordered that Girard not be turned over to Japanese authorities until further arguments are heard.
J F Kelly Morgan County forester says with proper fire control and sustainable management the local forestry sector could reach an annual retail value of 2.5 million dollars over 40 years. Last year the industry added over 500000 dollars to the economy, and Alabama ranks high nationally for lumber and pulpwood output. Fires this year totaled 19, mainly in February, burning 813 acres and costing over 5354 dollars, with danger peaking between September and April.
A flat-bed truck carrying migrant laborers and a tractor-trailer collided at a highway intersection nine miles north of Fayetteville. Sixteen people died and 41 were injured as fire swept the scene. Injured included Horace Burnette of Macon Georgia and Calvin Melvin of Eufaula Alabama. Trucker Gilbert Robert Peters, driver of the tractor-trailer, was slightly hurt.
