Church membership climbs as finances lag inflation
America’s religious bodies report rising membership and steady attendance while outlays for new buildings and overall giving grow. Membership reaches 132,287,450, about 62.3 percent of the population, with Protestants leading and Catholics, Orthodox, Jews, and others making up the rest. Construction value hits 947 million, church attendance stays around 40 percent weekly, and gifts to religious institutions total 11.68 billion in 1975, though inflation outpaces gains. Clergy counts rise slightly across denominations, while nun numbers continue a long decline.
