Washington reports the United States remains neutral as global conflict intensifies. Government officials emphasize noninvolvement while monitoring developments and safeguarding national security interests.
Press officer Robert J. McCloskey described a Worthington manager’s injuries after an unspecified accident. A news conference noted State travel restrictions on Americans to 14 countries amid Middle East hostilities, naming Iraq Saudi Arabia Kuwait and several other nations, with officials stating the U S will strive to maintain neutrality.
In a third Middle East outbreak in 20 years fighting erupts across Israel and Egypt in Sinai and on Syria and Jordan borders. UN forces had guarded Sinai cities until Egypt ordered them out. The UN Security Council convenes in New York as casualties mount including Indian and Brazilian personnel.
New York stocks closed lower amid heavy trading while Chicago grain futures rose. Wheat and corn advanced on strong demand expectations and soybeans climbed to 27.25 dollars per bushel.
U S Marines crushed a Communist regiment about 25 miles southwest of Da Nang after two days of heavy fighting. The unit, estimated at 3 000 men before the battle, suffered about 570 killed while Leatherneck casualties reached 73 dead and 139 wounded. Two U S planes were downed over North Vietnam, bringing total U S combat losses in the North to 571.
A major power failure cut electricity from New Jersey to Delaware hitting Newark and Philadelphia while New York City and other 1965 blackout areas were spared. Public Service Co of New Jersey said nine generating stations were knocked out and restoration time was unknown.
Three nights of rock throwing looting and scattered sniper fire shock Boston as clashes erupt in Negro districts. Businessmen report the community is appalled at the violence and waste while calling for restoration of peace. The focal point of Sunday’s unrest centers on the city’s sprawl ing areas and local reactions intensify across the region.
United Rubber workers staged mass picketing at the B. F. Goodrich Co. plant in Akron Ohio to protest the stalled six week old strike. The scene reflected ongoing labor tensions amid the nationwide rubber walkout.
Former serial killer Albert Speck is sentenced to death for the 1966 nurse murder. The jury imposed the maximum penalty though the judge was not required to. The ruling begins a lengthy appeals process, with coverage continued on Page A-2.
