Suspected Arson Bumps Decatur Fire Loss to Eighty Thousand
Roundup of city fires shows eighty thousand dollars in damage last month from two major blazes at Sterchi Bros. Store and the Baur Building with arson suspected in both cases. Deputy Fire Chief Marshall Frank Chavers investigated the Baur Building fire on May 16 and was present for the Sterchi's fire on May 19. The sole clue found was a bottle with kerosene trace. Total fire damage in the Second Avenue business district since March 13 is about five hundred eighteen thousand dollars, including the corner blaze at 2nd Ave and Moulton.
