Weather notes show occasional rain in the south and central areas with a 93 degree high and 72 low. Local updates include theater listings, travel plans, service members' letters, church and youth activities, Scout meetings, and council and court notices.
Allied forces report sinking a 6 000 ton armed transport with probable loss of 12 000 Japanese troops in the Southwest Pacific. Four Japanese midget submarines are said sunk in the Sydney raid. Additional Allied submarines sank two Japanese supply ships and damaged a third. Japanese subs near Australia attacked three Allied cargo ships, sinking one. Japan claims offensives in Chekiang, Kwangtung, Kiangsi and a new Kiangsi front as a final warning to Chiang Kai-shek.
Merchants bankers and professionals are urged to attend a 7:30 pm meeting at the Lyons hotel assembly hall. John R Black and P L T Beavers from the Birmingham Federal Reserve will discuss regulation W as amended May 6 and its impact on installment sales and charge accounts. Sam C Alexander and Troy Martin urge attendees to bring employees for familiarization. Invitations extended to surrounding merchants. large turnout expected. After the meeting, attendees will return to Birmingham.
Miss Amelia Troy aged about 88 died this morning at Benevolent Society hospital after a months long illness. A longtime Decatur teacher and librarian she moved from Hillsdale Michigan circa 1898 and taught in city schools since 1898 or 1899. Survived by cousins in Colorado and Chicago funeral arrangements announced by Brown toward later date.
Hunter Richards aged 72 died of a heart attack yesterday morning at 9 30 at his residence on Moulton Route Four. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 3 o'clock at Heflin cemetery with George Montgomery officiating. Interment will follow. He was a Baptist and longtime Lawrence county resident. Survived by widow Martha Richards three sons J M and Arthur of Moulton Melvin of Cottage Grove Oregon a daughter Mrs Russell Richie of Delmar and sister Mrs Mattie Bates of Sheffield.

British bombers heavily hit Bremen the German port in a 94th raid linked to a Dieppe attack. A follow up strike targeted shipyards docks and railways while Commandos in Boulogne Le Touquet area reported slight casualties and valuable reconnaissance. four German planes were destroyed during the night over France and Britain.
Summer school for junior and senior high students will begin Monday June with W R Riley in charge assisted by a faculty including Miss Lillian Od om Miss Lila Pritchett Miss Lucile Russell and Mrs J D Garren. All students interested meet at junior high Monday morning at nine o clock. Mr Riley will be at his office Friday afternoon and Saturday.
Berlin officials announce Reinhard Heydrich, 36, Reichsprotector for Bohemia and Moravia, died in Prague from wounds suffered in the May 27 assassination attempt. Reports say the shooting may trigger mass reprisals and executions across German-occupied Europe.
Congress formally voted war against Bulgaria Hungary and Romania with the Senate approving resolutions without dissent. The Senate tallied 67-0 on Bulgaria 71-0 on Hungary and 73-0 on Romania, completing in 22 minutes. President Roosevelt stated the nations were allied with the Axis and preparing to extend activities.
Washington reports trillions in defense outlays as Congress advances a massive Navy coast guard and Marine bill and considers an 8.3 billion plan to nearly double the fleet. A forthcoming Army supply bill could push total war spending past 200 billion within a month. Vinson leads a 500 ship build plan including carriers cruisers destroyers and support craft.
The American Legion national convention will meet in Kansas City Missouri in September 2021 instead of New Orleans. New Orleans gave up the meeting due to coastal risks and transportation concerns. Kansas City was chosen by the national executive committee over seven other Midwestern cities.
The Navy report says the second wave over Dutch Harbor Alaska yesterday did not drop bombs and likely conducted only reconnaissance. The Cythera, a naval patrol vessel, is presumed lost in the Atlantic. next of kin have been notified. Secretary Stimson warned further raids may come.
