The Chinese lantern is a perennial with an underground creeping root stock that sends up new shoots each spring. It flowers in July and August with small inconspicuous blooms and red berries inside red balloon like canopies. Plant roots about a foot apart and cover with two to four inches of soil. It tolerates sandy loam with sun and requires regular arsenate of lead spraying for insects.
