The Alabama West Florida Conference of the Methodist Church voted to defer membership action in the National Council of Churches for another year. A study committee asked for extra time citing recent Alabama events, while a proposed withdrawal resolution was not voted on. Three of five constitutional amendments were approved, including bishop transfers between conference jurisdictions.
The report notes lay membership rules for the conference and rejects proposals to dissolve the Central Jurisdiction of Negro churches and to assign them elsewhere. It also disapproves calls for simultaneous meetings of all conferences and permits each pastoral charge to elect lay members equal to its effective full time ministers.
