AAP report from Oxford Nebraska describes the North and South Platte rivers flooding toward a feared junction, leaving nearly 100 dead and thousands homeless across a 200 mile Nebraska region. Damage estimates exceed 12 million dollars as communications fail and recovery begins.
The Supreme Court ruled 6 to 3 that using commodity price indexes to set utility rates is invalid. Maryland Public Service Commission had ordered Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone of Baltimore to cut annual intrastate revenue by at least 850000, a decision the court found improper. Justice Roberts wrote the majority opinion with Justices Stone Brandeis and Cardozo dissenting.
New York June 3. Extraordinary vigilance to prevent gun smuggling to Cuba began today as Harry M. Durning collector of customs and Harry Fole surveyor of customs doubled the guard and searching squads on all vessels clearing for the island.
Decatur resident Leo Johnson was one of three victims at a Stan Oil station in Athens when three unmasked men roped the group and fled with cash after forcing Miss Lena Mae Jones from the car. Johnson said the robbers looted the cash drawer and fled toward Pulaski, with a trail seen through Ardmore. Police believe the heist was carefully planned and are reviewing witnesses near the block.
In a Lauderdale Mississippi murder trial, 67 year old W M Carter denied shooting Mrs Daisy Keeton and said he had a long term love affair with Ouida Keeton while insisting no improper relation occurred. Defense witness GC Griffin testified of a loud argument heard near the Keeton home on Jan 19.
Alabama Power asks a judge to block Decatur from borrowing under a 1934 loan contract to build an electric plant and distribution system. Amendments allow city to buy power. hearing before Judge Griffith continues with both sides presenting arguments.
The state completed its case against Waddie Casey a Black man charged with murder in the March 6 shooting of Otto Dilbeck a 19 year old white youth in the city. Defense began presenting witnesses as the case headed for the jury. A second defendant William Allen also charged with murder will be tried after Casey.
Washington AP June 3 The Supreme Court agreed to rule next fall on the constitutionality of part of the Home Owners’ Loan Act of 1933. The decision will address key provisions of the New Deal housing relief program and its legality.
Volney Davis a 33 year old Barker-Karpis gang member pleaded guilty to a share in the 200000 Bremer kidnapping of St Paul banker Edward G Bremer. He admitted guilt after capture in Chicago and was arraigned before Judge M M Joyce, with Barker already sentenced to life. Alvin Karpis remains at large.
Washington reports six months of clashes as President Roosevelt plans a general NRA policy, Speaker Burns resists early adjournment, and Senator O Mahoney pushes federal incorporation of interstate business. Treasury reveals a deficit of 3.13 billion for the year to June 30. Farm credits show 2.38 billion in farmer loans from May 1933 to Dec 1934.

He discussed opportunities in science, showcased peanut derivatives, and highlighted infantile paralysis cures, urging home production of foodstuffs and noting peanut derived products including milk ink dye and rubber.
Rev R L Harrell of Athens delivered the commencement sermon at Decatur high school Riverside auditorium. He denounced war profiteering by munitions interests and urged graduates to advocate peace rather than war. He noted the public glamor of war hides its horrors and urged future leaders to steer thoughts and actions toward peace.

The Normandie arrived in New York amid wild acclaim on her maiden voyage from Southampton. She clocked 107 hours 33 minutes to cross northern waters, 748 miles in 25 hours, and 31.39 knots peak speed, drawing crowds along Brooklyn and Long Island shores as planes, sirens, and cheering craft hailed the blue ribbon liner.
Two National Guard companies were sent to Monroe Georgia to guard the Walton Textile mills during a strike. The plant will reopen at 6 a m officials said as locals reportedly cannot handle the situation. About 400 workers are employed and several fights and disturbances were noted since the strike began with many workers wanting to return but being intimated.

No arrest made as two men fled in a V eight Ford with no plates after abandoning a ransom tape. A police broadcast warned of two men with rifles traveling from Arvin toward Lancaster and Los Angeles.
Department of justice agents distributed circulars detailing 20 000 bank notes used to ransom 9 year old George Weyerhaeuser last week and announced the arrest in Chicago of Volney Davis, linked to the St Paul 200 000 kidnapping and the Bremer case. Davis, once connected with Alvin Karpis, was identified as present in Seattle May 24 the George kidnapping day.
