Alabama’s seven state universities grow by name change
In 30 months Alabama nearly tripled state owned universities without new buildings or costs. Five small colleges became universities, each with its own board of trustees, boosting prestige and enabling direct budget requests. Officials say little changed beyond branding, while leaders report added enthusiasm and expanded graduate offerings.

Lawmakers Review Brewer Budget and Tax Plan
The Alabama legislature returns Tuesday to examine Gov. Albert Brewer’s general fund budget likely exceeding 66 million dollars, up about 4 million from the current year. Brewer’s Medicaid funding is separate, aiming to raise 14.5 million via beer, cigarette, and liquor taxes to support the federal indigent care program. The week is shortened. House and Senate meet two days as the Alabama Girls' State Legislature sets Thursday. The Senate also watches a select committee on a proposed consumer credit code, led by Crenshaw County’s Alton Turner, amid potential delays and opposition from Sen. Pierre Pelham of Mobile.
