Supreme Court frees press in Minnesota case
The Supreme Court in a five to four decision held Minnesota’s 1925 law allowing suppression of a newspaper unconstitutional. The Saturday Press of Minneapolis had been enjoined for alleged malicious or defamatory content about public officials. Chief Justice Hughes stated the law infringed press liberty under the Fourteenth Amendment, acting as censorship with libel laws as remedy.
