Yale University faculty and administration, 307 signers including seven deans and many department chairs, sent a petition to President Kennedy backing the Freedom Ride movement and denouncing arrests and convictions under segregation laws in southern bus and train terminals. Copies were sent to allied congressional delegates.
A petition warns that mobs threaten law enforcement, alleging effective intimidation and possible collusion between mobs and local police. It cites recent brutal assaults by mobs as evidence of escalating danger to officers.
Airman Robert L Hill son of Mr and Mrs Carl J Rains of Hart-Selle has been assigned to a Strategic Air Command unit at MacDill AFB Florida for vehicle operator training after completing basic military training at Lackland.
