Allied air raids in the Pacific reported success against Japanese bases in Timor, New Guinea and the Solomon Islands after a Sydney harbor attack by two man midget submarines. MacArthur met Curtin in Melbourne amid speculation the subs’ mothership was damaged or captured.
DEWITT MACKENZIE notes a massive Allied raid employing about 1250 aircraft that devastated a central German city of Crete. Churchill calls it a herald of punishment to come, while Lieut. General Henry Arnold announces near completion of talks with Britain on air force collaboration.

John M. Nelson, secretary of the Decatur Chamber of Commerce, urged the public to list furnished and unfurnished houses and apartments to meet high demand. He noted 250 to 300 single rooms are already on file and that new arrivals could number about a hundred this week, exhausting current listings.
Louis P. Lochner, writing from the repatriation ship Drottningholm, reports Adolf Hitler plans a general offensive on the Russian front and a possible move through Turkey and Iran to surprise the Allies. A preparatory Southern Russian front sees is described as cleaning the boards for a major imminent action.

Mrs. Ann Wiley age 89 long time Courtland resident died at home this morning. She is survived by daughter Mrs. J W Horton of Courtland son H M Wiley of Huntaville Texas sisters Mrs J F Coffey of Courtland and Mrs J A Walker of Chattanooga. Funeral services set for 5 30 this afternoon at the residence conducted by Revs J B Coggins M Gregg and R F McDonald with interment in Courtland cemetery. Pallbearers listed as W F Crow J M Coffey D A Coffey Frank Wiley Frank Coburn Ed Bowles Brown directing.
Mrs. C Lindsey of Sheffield died at two this morning in Coffee hospital Florence. A Belle Mina native born Emily White she left a son William Carl Lindsey and a grandson William Carl II. She is survived by sister Elizabeth W Neville of Decatur. Funeral at Sheffield Episcopal Church tomorrow at 10 a.m. Interment in Decatur City Cemetery.
A 67 year old man and his 58 year old sister were taken into protective custody after a Friday night incident near Hartselle. The man allegedly started a fire destroying a barn with cows and farm equipment, threatened deputies with a high powered rifle, and the sister aided or resisted then supplied dynamite caps. Deputies and residents avoided injury as the blaze spread and the menaced group faced gun and dynamite threats while the father aged 97 was cared for by neighbors. The pair remain jailed as authorities assess transfer to Bryce Hospital.
Atlanta June 1 The study of housing needs for Southeastern defense zones begins today to curb new construction to essential needs Regional Housing Director Frank Etheridge says some cities may lose critical housing status and face near elimination of new builds while others should see fewer dwelling units slated for wartime needs due to policy shifts and material shortages.
London reports a near completion of US and British air force talks to launch a coordinated night bombing campaign on German cities.
