Report from Charleston says seven Baldwin detectives and three miners were killed near Mucklow when a machine gun exploded by dynamite in a guerrilla warfare flare up between miners and detectives. State authorities are powerless and unable to obtain details of the wholesale killings.
Taft faces a tariff dilemma like last summer as Democrats and Progressive Republicans join to block a wool tariff reduction. The La Follette bill passes 47 to 20, with Borah Bristow Clapp Crawford Cummins Grenna Kenyon LaFollette Poindexter Works backing the measure. A conference blends the two bills, signaling a possible presidential veto and renewed battles over wool raw duties and manufactured goods tariffs.
White Plains N Y July 26 Justice Keogh ruled Harry K Thaw remains sane and not entitled to release in a habeas corpus ruling. He is held in county jail and ordered returned to Mattewan asylum, with Keogh citing Thaws status as a menace to public safety.
Dr. J H Junghans national organizer for the Jr. O.U.A.M. states Woodrow Wilson is the nation’s favorite for president based on his travels. He notes Wilson leads in Washington and Pittsburgh and anticipates strong support in the South. Junghans heads to Birmingham after discussing with State Secretary W W Nelson.
Washington dispatch says Secretary Mac Veagh appointed William B. Hooper acting internal revenue collector awaiting Thompson’s successor. Hooper, long involved in local revenue service, is expected to please Taft supporters. names Wright and Mason surface among expected choices.
The Council Jr. O. U. M. will conduct an installation of officers. All visiting members of the order are invited to attend the installation.
A writ of certiorari was granted to review Ben Strange’s six month County road sentence for violating prohibition laws. The Court of Appeals had sustained the lower court. the case will be heard by the Supreme Court in December. Attorney Teens argued to set aside the Court of Appeals ruling. A similar move will be pursued in Charlie Woodward’s case later.
Birmingham July 26 regular Republicans removed Byron G. Trammell and F. B. Daughtry from the Alabama state Republican committee. They were replaced by Charles Roland of Dothan and W. H. Edwards of Auburn loyal to President Taft. A state campaign committee to direct Taft’s bid was named, led by John B. Curtis and others, as the executive committee met at City Hall with Pope M. Long presiding. Maj. P. D. Barker of Mobile attended as a Taft referee.
Leader Underwood ordered House members to return to Washington and work, blocking excuses for private business. He said sickness only will be accepted and noted keeping a quorum is difficult, with notices sent to members to come to Washington.
United Press reports that the Progressive leaders abandon a no platform stance and propose a Contract with the People to restore representative government. They outline views on initiative and referendum recall direct primaries social reform and living standards while avoiding immediate relief for cost of living and unemployment. Medill McCormick notes a telegram from Col Roosevelt urging a fight on honesty and party rank and file backing.
Company E Alabama National Guard returns from ten days in camp at Anniston tired but proud. Captain R C Horton reports excellent discipline equipment and soldierly appearance. Horton named to advisory board of the Officers Club of the Fourth Regiment in Montgomery.
Judge Thomas Wert's car, rushing to turn on Somerville road, skidded into a ditch injuring none seriously. Passengers Carlisle Blackwell Charles Eye and Jeff Minor were shaken but unhurt. Wert and party returned to the city, garage workers dispatched to retrieve the vehicle.
Falkville meets Gurley at New Decautral Park tomorrow afternoon at four. Local teams square off as fans expect a strong game with a sizable crowd drawn by solid recent form.
Lawson Sykes, noted Decatur cotton man, says Europe and England show rising demand and prices. He predicts cotton will rise above twelve cents this season with foreign buyers, spinners, and local mills seeking cargo as weather in London stays mild.
July 26 Sheffield news reports the drowning of Manly P. Weaver, 28, a popular local man. He and Howard A. Jones were fishing when their boat overturned near the Florence bridge. Weaver released his hold and was swept downstream in fifteen feet of water. Jones clung to a pier. Weaver left a wife and two year old son.
J. J. Hazel and wife of Memphis arrived with the body of their infant daughter Lenora who died in Memphis. The burial took place at Chesnut Grove cemetery near Decatur. Creel, the father of Mrs. Hazel, accompanied the party, and the Hazels will remain through Saturday inviting relatives.
Gov Woodrow Wilson will not stay home during the presidential campaign. He will stump Maine and New York with allies, target key party leaders, and seek favorable state nominations through Senator O Gorman, while planning speeches in Brooklyn and other states with allies Baldwin Clark Marshall Underwood and Harmon.
The Alberta peach crop is harvest and farmers report an unusually fine yield with trees loaded to capacity. Market buyers see strong demand as Alberta peaches fetch 65 to 75 cents per basket with quality high despite heavy spring rains.
Rev Elmer Huffer of Grand Junction Colorado urged Helen Gould a single heiress to marry a man of modest means saying riches hinder happiness and suggesting she work as a waitress or chambermaid to find a compatible partner. Gould replied defending bachelor women and independence while noting societal views on marriage and progress.
