Harold A. Young president of the National Cotton Council announced that cotton men from Virginia to California have been asked to support a research and promotion program for 1949. He said the plan seeks cooperation from farmers ginners warehousemen merchants crushers and spinners before heavy veterans of this year's crop begins.
General William Donovan called for worldwide pressure on the Soviet Union after the Berlin blockade. He proposed delaying access to canals and pressing Turkey to close routes, arguing that a global response should target Soviet weakness beyond Berlin. He rejected the cold war label, noting hot tensions and Soviet maneuvers while weather hampered travel.
Hong Kong dispatch reports at least six Americans and two Canadians among 25 dead when a Catalina flying boat en route from Macao to Hong Kong crashed four miles east of Macao and exploded. One survivor Wong Yu, a Hong Kong Chinese, leaped from a window breaking both legs. Cause unknown.
The General locomotive, famed for a 100 mile chase, will be on display at the Chicago railroad fair. Captured by Union soldiers in 1862 at Big Shanty Georgia it was recovered by its train crew. Moscow radio reports Bulganin says Russia is successfully developing multi engined and jet propelled aviation. Bulgaria allegedly orders airmen and aviation workers to strengthen the might of the USSR and to pursue new successes in modern aviation technique.

The Cullman Electric Cooperative secured a 1 005 000 loan from REA to fund 332 miles of new power lines in Morgan Cullman and Winston counties serving 1 804 new customers. The expansion includes the Grayson lumber camp and adds about 75 customers in Morgan County near Cullman.

The late Lelia Seton Edmundson's will establishes the W. B. and Lelia Seton Edmundson Trust Fund to fund missionary work in rural districts and small towns. Rt. Rev. C. J. Carpenter serves as trustee, with annual reports to the diocesan council. Elizabeth Horton receives the largest bequest, plus land and a life monthly income. Executors are Bishop Carpenter and Charles H. Eyster.
Delegates at a Southern Democrats anti Truman conference say they can yield up to 127 electoral votes in November. Alabama pledges 11 to Truman rival, Mississippi 9 also backing alternatives, Texas 33 electors can be instructed, while Virginia 11 electors are pledged for Truman but could be swayed. Florida and others show mixed positions amid court rulings and party rules.
The world champion fine harness pony Fireball, owned and driven by Nanette Hewitt of Albertville, will exhibit at the 17th annual Tennessee Valley Horse Show in Benson Field on July 29. The show offers 1615 in cash prizes across 13 classes with proceeds aiding sight conservation and charity.
An unidentified girl was slightly injured in an auto crash near the Whiteside cafe on High way 31 between 8 30 and 9 p m Saturday night. She received treatment for cuts and bruises and was dismissed at Baugh and Wiley clinic after a passing truck took her. Highway Patrol said no report reached their office by 10 p m Saturday.
Gov. Strom Thurmond, 45, a states rights candidate, moves into national politics after pushing a South Carolina government reorganization plan. He derides FEPC as communism and defends constitutional rights while opposing federal anti lynch and poll tax legislation.
Brig. Gen. Herbert Holdridge, removed under police guard from a municipal auditorium, denounced the nomination process at a states rights convention in Birmingham. He said police warned him to stay away and planned to leave town, expressing belief democracy and the race segregation issue could not be solved at the event.
Oscar Minor, 41, shot and killed his former wife as she held their 10 month old baby four miles east of Clanton Alabama. He then killed himself at the home of his brother injuring the infant. The couple had just finalized a divorce in equity court. They were parents of eight children.
Secretary of State Marshall said the United States will press for effective international control of atomic energy despite the deadlock with the Soviet Union. He called harnessing the atom to peaceful purposes a paramount problem of humanity and warned a sham control is worse than none. The note outlines two years of effort, noting UN Security Council deadlock and predicting renewed dispute at the September UN session.
Defiant Dixie democrats named two Southern governors to head a campaign to defeat Mr. Truman in the Solid South in November. J. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina was chosen as Presidential candidate and Fielding L. Wright of Mississippi as Vice President. Angered over what both candidates termed a stab in the back at the democratic convention, the meeting vowed the South will never surrender local control on racial issues.
Arkansas Governor Ben Laney called for Democratic unity in each state after the Southern Democrats convention adjourned He urged avoiding a permanent split while opposing the President's civil rights program and noted he was not nominated for president on a states rights ticket.
The Philadelphia convention backs civil rights, triggering a regional revolt. Both candidates decline victory claims, pledging to show the national party a southern core. Campaigns will target 15 states including Missouri. Birmingham overflowed the city auditorium with 7,500 attendees, far exceeding capacity. An October 1 meeting will again gather state delegates.
