Mostly cloudy Sunday with scattered thundershowers and light southerly winds dominating coastal outlook. Recurring hospital admissions and discharges populate the Decatur area as rainfall totals from TVA station reach 3.27 inches in the past day.
Gen. J. Lawton Collins said American forces will hold an extensive bridge head in South Korea and drive back the Reds, as new weapons and tanks move into Korea. Gen. Hoyt Vandenberg backed morale, saying pilots are enthusiastic and confident.
API extension service dairy officials fix dates for eight district cattle shows. Shows include Dadevile Sept 16 18 and Decatur Sept 26 with Dadeville and Uniontown in October. The dates cover three shows and other districts as listed.
Proctor and Tom Pettus Moulton attorneys will run in a Lawrence County solicitor special election called by the Democratic committee. Governor Folsom has not set a date yet. The race follows a grand jury report on box two and a resignation by Proctor amid ballot irregularities and indictments.
Rep. James E. Van Zandt told the Pennsylvania Veterans of Foreign Wars convention that American troops may have to evacuate Korea within 72 hours. He warned of being outnumbered ten to one and equipment shortages as Kum River crossings signaled a communist advance.
Stalin sends a personal message to Jawaharlal Nehru replying to his plea over the Korean fighting. Contents of the note were not disclosed. Nehru had offered to serve as a channel in the Korean conflict and sent a personal note to Stalin.
In Illinois a farm widow, Mrs Wright, 56, built a huge bonfire of rubbish and wood and then apparently dove headfirst into it, dying. Coroner David L. Klontz said no foul play was found and an inquest is planned next week. Her scorched body was found by her two sons about half a mile from their field work. The bonfire stood near the center of this six foot wide blaze, 12 miles west of Rockford.
An escaped Tennessee convict was rearrested by Cullman County authorities. Kimbrell, a native of Cullman, was sent up from Cullman County in 1944 on a grand larceny charge. his parents and wife still reside in the area.
Far East Air Forces commander Lt. Gen. George E. Stratemeyer said F-80 Shooting Stars accounted for 85 percent of North Korean vehicle and materiel losses and flew 70 percent of combat sorties. He defended the jets against rumors and praised their speed and accuracy. MacArthur HQ credited four Australian Mustangs with stopping a North Korean river crossing, with pilots describing a barge attack that stained the water red.
Decatur honors Paul Weeks Litchfield chairman of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber company on his 75th birthday and 50 years as an executive. The Decatur Chamber of Commerce praises his contributions to the rubber industry and to Decatur's Goodyear mills. Story continues on Page 10.

The 82 1-2 ton Caroline Marsworld, the era’s largest flying boat, completed a 480 mile Pacific flight from Honolulu to Alameda Naval Air Station with engines on only two functioning units. Fifteen crewmen and three Navy passengers—safely aboard—were poised to crash as night fell over the Pacific, but the craft landed after a perilous over-water journey with one engine malfunctioning and a five foot sea crest. Rescue aircraft and crews stood by as the ship's wing and altitude shifted during the harrowing return.
Democratic opposition in Congress blocks rapid wartime price wage and rationing controls over Korea. Senator George D Ga leader of the Senate finance committee warns against sweeping controls now or later. Senator Connally says controls unnecessary now Taft also opposes standby powers. Administration considers voluntary allocations for steel and other war materials to aid production while avoiding rigid controls. Travel curbs and possible new defense funding loom as Truman expected to report developments next week.
Washington reports an envoy pledges American and Korean cooperation to decisively defeat communism in Korea. The message praises U S forces morale and patience, notes victory is seen as imminent, and expresses gratitude to President Truman and the American people for Korea’s defense and long alliance.

A kerosene range exploded in Hugo Oklahoma killing three Poindexter children. William Earl and James Harold Poindexter 13 months old twins and four-year-old Thomas Anthony died. Mrs Poindexter and six-year-old John Raymond were away when blast occurred. Cause under investigation.
Athens Greece July 15 Field Marshal Alexander Papagos said in a newspaper interview that communist military movements in the Balkans are part of a war of nerves He doubted Russia is ready for a world war and noted 14000 Greek communist guerrillas scattered in Albania Bulgaria and other Soviet satellites He said only 6000 were reported massed on the Bulgarian Greek border and that Greece could destroy them if they attacked Greece on its borders.
In Birmingham Alabama the Southern Association wrapped up Umpire Appreciation Week as fans showered the league's 11 umpires with radios wrist watches clothes sports equipment and other gifts. The event closed the fan led tribute sponsored by the news.
Camp Pickett Virginia July 15 The famous Confederate flag was missing as the 175th Maryland National Guard regiment marched in the 29th review. The reason was not known at the scene.
U S infantry aided by around the clock bombing checked a North Korean lunge across the Kum near Taejon in heavy fighting. field dispatches say the bridgehead on the South bank was held as air strikes disrupted enemy pressure and fires broke out along the river.
A U S Eighth Army spokesman said the 24th Division repulsed strong North Korean attacks on the Western front near Taejon. Air strikes hit targets north of the Kum river and in Kongju area as Reds concentrate vehicles and tanks for a southward push. Fires burned near Kongju, indicating a hit on a supply dump.
