Birmingham July 12 Judge Dan Greene says former Governor B B Comer will seek re nomination. Greene heard Comer’s July Fourth speech at Albertville and says he practically announced a candidacy. Comer stated his hat is in the ring if needed to lead against a rate change.
Judge Jonathen Haralson longtime Alabama Supreme Court associate justice died at his home in Montgomery this morning at age 82 after a period of illness. He retired from the bench in 1908 and funeral services are set for 1 p.m. Friday at the rear 10 South Perry Street with Rev. Charles A. Stakely. Interment will follow in Selma.
The region expects showers tonight and on Saturday with cooler intervals. Wet conditions may affect outdoor plans and travel. A light breeze accompanies the unsettled spell. Temperature ranges peek in the low to mid sixties during the day and fall into the forties at night.
Montgomery dispatch to the Birmingham Age-Herald reports Thomas H. Shipp, once Morgan county sheriff, was cited to appear at the state legal department over unpaid funds. Public Examiner Charles L. Towne charged Shipp with money discrepancies in feed books and related records. No further details available. Shipp is reportedly in Louisiana with home in Hartselle. Cotton market notes show middling at 27 1 4 and overall steady.

W A Warner Morgan County Republican Executive Committee chairman says foreign reports misrepresented the meeting. He claims 19 of 36 members attended while 18 endorsed McBride and 16 endorsed Warner, denying any official vote on the Hart Selle postmaster and noting attempts to block attendance. Sherill of Hartwell confirms no quorum existed and recalls only 19 members out of 36.
United Press reports Helen Keller, the Boston blind woman, staying at Elmhurst the summer home of Mrs. William Thaw in Altoona Pennsylvania. The Thaw family formerly hosted summer parties here. since the Stanford White case, the mother retreated to the mountains then travels by plane to aid her son’s freedom ailing with grief. Keller has long been a friend of Mrs. Thaw in charitable circles.
The Decatur brass band known as the Twin City Concert Band has formed with H G Hauk as president and Z Faulkner directing. The group offers first class brass music for political events celebrations rallies parks and fairs at reasonable cost.
Commissioner Hardage returned from Montgomery where he represented Morgan County in state actions. The suit against Hardage McClanahan Jackson and Forman over county road and bridge improvements was dismissed after facts were presented. A separate suit against County Treasurer Ryan for pauper claims and office equipment was also dismissed.
Senator Lorimer resumed his defense in Washington amid a blast at the so called press trust. He warned of a plot by Bryan Roosevelt and Taft to destroy him. The hall overflowed with spectators as his three hour speech left him weary and drenched in sweat. He denounced Helm Committee claims and accused White of perjury while asserting money influence in Illinois politics and Roosevelt campaign donations. A Senate recess paused proceedings with a quotation expected on reconvening.
Stockholm July 12 Amerigan Army results feature Taipale of Finland breaking the Olympic discus record with 148 feet. Roy Byrd of Adrian College places second and Duncan of New York third in discus. Patton of the United States Army wins the Pentathlon cross country run. A L Cutleron of Vermont University wins the broad jump at 24 feet 11 inches. Americans take all finals in 110 meter hurdles and Pentathlon places. Patton finishes sixth.
Horton and Hodges avenue closed a contract with Hitt Lumber Co to furnish the offices in the city building in Decatur. They will be finished soon and the offices are expected to be among the handsomest in North Abani.
The First Baptist Church of Decatur clears 8313.79 in total indebtedness after two weeks of fund raising. Funds deposited at First National Bank settle organ parsonage church debt and sidewalk costs tied to the 1908 building. Several members contributed large sums amid plans to dedicate the church soon.
Washington issues instructions to postmasters to bar young women from the general delivery window in large cities. In Philadelphia officers will require home addresses and reasons for not receiving mail at home. The reform aims to limit misuse of the window, inspector says.
Meredith Smith and Lee Smith of Long Island Jackson County were brought to Huntsville on charges of rifling a rural mail box and abstracting letters. They allegedly obtained about $18 in sums. The theft occurred near Long Island.
Washington reports Rep Victor Berger Wisconsin Socialist introduces a bill to create a special government loan fund for states counties and cities to finance public improvements. He argues it would provide employment for the jobless and criticizes the Aldrich currency plan while noting past government aid to bankers.
A heavy wind and rain storm struck Moorsville yesterday after noon and caused major damage to corn crops on two or three farms. One crop was described as absolutely destroyed while others suffered little or no damage.
Camp Pettus Alabama July 12 Privates Charles Kirby and Herbert Rape of Company B Second Alabama Infantry Birmingham were killed by a lightning bolt during a storm. Eleven others were badly shocked and at least three may die. The crew were rushed to a field hospital with several unable to walk. First Sergeant Downey and others suffered injuries, with some in critical condition.
