UN urged as heavy fighting erupts near Suez Canal

Egyptian and Israeli jets tanks and artillery battled for nine hours near the Suez Canal in the largest clash since the June cease fire. The fight paused at night but continued before the United Nations in New York with both sides blaming the other for breaking the cease-fire. Egypt said it lost a plane during dog fights. Israel said an Egyptian MIG21 was shot down south of Port Said.

Armed Gurkhas patrol tense Hong Kong border village

Six hundred Gurkha troops patrolled Shu Tau Kok village in Hong Kong after more than 1,000 Communist Chinese crossed the border and attacked a police post and government building. Five police were killed and 18 wounded. 86 officers barricaded the post and 80 in the nearby building. Officials said the attack appeared isolated and not a broader offensive.
