Scattered thundershowers are forecast this afternoon and tonight in the extreme southeast with little temperature change. The river is reported falling to 18 feet as daily notices recount residents visiting, births, illnesses, and weekend guests across Decatur, Birmingham, Huntsville, and surrounding towns.
The Navy reports U S submarines sunk three Japanese destroyers in the Aleutians on July 4 and left a fourth burning. At Kiska two destroyers sunk, one burning. at Agattu the fourth sunk. Japanese losses total five ships sunk and nine damaged, with evacuees moved to Juneau. Attu residents not evacuated due to landing.
Violent death over the two day Fourth of July weekend totaled 334, down from 628 for the three day celebration last year. AP survey cites 169 traffic deaths, 90 drownings, 75 other causes. no fireworks casualties. State tallies show Alabama five, Florida three, Georgia one, Mississippi none, South Carolina four, Tennessee three.

Frank Deese, from near Ashford, was arrested in Dothan for the Montgomery hit and run. he claimed another driver. Vann family members were in Montgomery to sell watermelons.
Eight alleged Nazi saboteurs captured after landing from Axis submarines on Long Island and in Florida are held in the district jail under heavy guard to face trial Wednesday morning by a special military commission. They are in Brig. Gen. Albert L. Cox’s custody as provost marshal. Formal charges allege violation of the law of war and the articles of war. the government is expected to seek the death penalty.
Elizabeth Williams aged 88 died at 812 Ferry street Sunday afternoon after a period of ill health. Born in Liverpool she came to the United States in 1909 and lived in Chicago before moving to Decatur. Funeral at Brown's chapel Tuesday at four with interment in the city cemetery.
Lt. Robert Walker said water sent by Alabama naval recruiters to Tennessee was from the Tennessee River, not the Gulf of Mexico, in a dispute over a two state enlistment contest. Tennessee led by July 6 with 139 recruits to Alabama's 199 as officers predicted a late surge.

Chinese dispatches report Chiang Kai-shek arm y units struck back against Japanese captors of Shwang Kiangsi retaking the town after 24 hours. The counter attack weakens Japanese efforts to trap large Chinese forces in Central Kiangsi and leaves a 25 mile gap on the Kiangsi Chekiang railway. Allied bombers again hit Japanese invasion bases in Timor and the Solomon Islands. Japanese forces attacked Port Moresby, New Guinea, with few casualties.
President Roosevelt cables Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek and the people of China, praising their five years of resistance to Japan since the Marco Polo Bridge incident. He pledges united action with the United Nations to defeat the enemy and achieve peace and freedom worldwide.
Little Vickie Sue Boley two year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs Charles E Boley died after a short illness. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at 5 p m at 1213 Fourth Avenue South with Dr A S Pitts conducting. Burial in Roselawn Cemetery. Surviving are her parents grandparents Mrs W W Young Mr Charles A Boley two aunts and three uncles.
