Funeral services for Mrs Nancy Jane Jolley 92 of Florence will be held at 9 a m Tuesday from the residence. The body lies in state at McAfee Howell & Young funeral parlors before the cortege to Tolley family cemetery. She is survived by her son Lee Jolley and other relatives.

Allied air squadrons attacked five major Sicily landing fields and claimed 43 Axis fighters shot down as air supremacy remains contested. British Spitfires escorted U S RAF bombers over Sicily, with raids targeting Catania, Trapani, Ostia, Fiumicino, and the Lido di Roma seaplane base near Rome. Italian and German defenses claimed heavy losses for the Allies.
Birmingham area marked Independence Day fatalities with three incidents and a fourth death. Second Lt William B Webster Jr from Norfolk Virginia and Staff Sgt Maurice V Seguin from Barre Vermont died when their plane struck a Birmingham dwelling roof. Drowning victim Fred D Deloach was fishing at Lake Purdy. John Nalls of Tarrant City died from shotgun wounds in a dispute. Coroner ruled death accidental for Webster and Seguin.
The Tennessee Valley in North Alabama cheered as the House voted 302 to 29 to knock down Senator McKellar’s measure to hamstring the TVA. Leaders vowed vigilance against political influence and ensured TVA could continue without that threat for now.
Funeral services for Dunlap Alexander, 41, who died in Miami Florida, will be held from Brown's Chapel at 10 A M Tuesday with Dr John C Cowell officiating. Interment will follow in Pulaski cemetery Pulaski Tenn. Brown directing. Acting as pallbearers will be Mr Alexander s mothers in law Marion Robertson Herman Kyle and W R Griffin and three of his school mates Louis Ling Arthur Nebrig and Johnnie Hodges.
KIRIWINA ISLAND Trobriand Group June 30 Delayed AP dispatch reports Green clad American troops landing on the flat jungle island without a single casualty or loss of material. General MacArthur toured the takeoff camps and the operation proceeded with no hitches as natives guided roads through the villages.
American Flying Fortresses hit the Mans engine works and U boat facilities at Nantes and La Pallice in daylight raids marking the first anniversary of U S aerial activity in Europe. RAF bombers joined in Cologne and Hamburg strikes while Dover coastal fights resume.
A Greek naval communique says the submarine Katsonis, operating with the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean, attacked and sank a small supply ship.
U S Navy reports heavy shelling by American warships on Vila and Bar Bairoko near New Georgia and Kolombangara in the Solomons during July 4th-5th operations. Attacks by Army Hudson bombers hit Rekata Bay Santa Isabel, while air and sea bases were targeted to disrupt the Munda airfield complex. Fires started in several enemy positions as ships pressed the Solomons drive.
American forces under General MacArthur seized Vura village at the southern tip of Vangunu Island and captured a strategic position on Rendova. In the battle 300 Japanese were killed, the garrison dispersed, and American losses were light. Allied air forces shot down multiple Japanese bombers and fighters in successive raids on Rendova and Munda in New Georgia.
