Victory unfolds mid course as Decatur High School finishers rest at the end of a long street hike. James Stoler, first, is followed by Ricky Rogers in fourth place with Mike Rogers taking second, all noted as local youths and son of area residents.
Oak Park eighth grader Becky Robinette ran the 16 mile March of Dimes Walkathon to raise funds for birth defect research. More than 1,000 Decatur participants gathered and raised over $18,000 while Becky, born with a heart defect corrected by Dr. John Kirkland, finished after about eight hours.
On this date in 1942 the first American expeditionary force arrived in Europe during World War II. The troops were landed in Northern Ireland as part of the buildup.
Decatur gasoline distributors aligned with the Tennessee River Valley Association to urge President Ford to avoid a petroleum tariff. They favor an allocation plan based on 1972 figures to limit consumption, warn tariffs hurt the poor, and call for cuts in imports with prioritized needs for homes farmers industry and essential services.

Principal M E Foster notes early steps since affiliating with the association, including instructional improvements, a stronger PTO, and new staff. He says accreditation could come faster than the usual three years, pending standards and funding considerations.
Washington AP reports the Energy Research and Development Administration ERDA born Jan 20 to consolidate energy research from AEC Interior EPA and NSF. The agency aims to end dependency on foreign suppliers by 1985 and to develop sun to earth energy tech and conservation.
