Leaders urge Morgan county residents to cast at least 8000 ballots in Tuesday's bond issue election. They say high turnout would draw state attention and influence political turnout in upcoming races. Polling places listed across Decatur and surrounding wards.
In Greenup Kentucky a three month old girl Magdalene Pitts died after alleged torture at home during a violent episode. The father Robert Pitts and his housekeeper were jailed as suspects. a special grand jury will convene before burial as visitors from Ohio West Virginia and Kentucky view the scene.
General W. E. Bare Alabama manager of the Southern Bell Telephone company is improved Monday following an operation for removal of his appendix on Saturday. Local telephone officials were advised today. General Bare has many friends in Decatur who wish for his speedy recovery and return to duty.
The county board of revenue convened in regular monthly session this morning to approve warrants and county accounts. The board will adjourn for the election tomorrow and reconvene Wednesday through Friday.
FP O Borton endorses the Daily classified columns as yielding gratifying results and dividends from small investments. He notes ads can be placed by telephone at 1009, without downtown visits, and many readers agree after trying the option.
Early today an intruder tried to enter W. M. Griffin's residence at 1301 Eighth Avenue. Griffin awakened by a window stick falling and sighted a black man at the window before the intruder fled, dropping a wire tool and a hatchet in the yard. Tracks show he searched for an unlocked window.
Sheriff B E Davis reports his office now holds a fourth piano seized by court action. An attachment was served at the Southern freight depot on a piano shipped from Decatur to Memphis, moved to the sheriff’s office and joined three other pianos awaiting disposition. No sheriff’s staff knows how to play the instruments.
Albany, Jan 9 AP Governor Smith had not announced his decision on clemency appeals for Ruth Snyder and Henry Judd Gray, the pair sentenced for the murder of Snyder's husband. Reported to have shown no leniency at a hearing, the delay comes as Snyder's visiting privileges are curtailed by Warden Dawes after smuggled letters to her mother were found.
Montgomery January 9 AP The doors of Kilby prison closed behind Roy Dickerson a bank bandit and escaped convict at 11 20 today He arrived in custody of two state officers and was taken to the penitentiary Dickerson was returned to serve a 25 year sentence for robbing the Phenix City Girard bank He was captured in Tacoma Washington on Christmas night for an attempted department store robbery.
Washington January 9 AP reports Senator Smoot chairman of the senate finance committee predicted that the 290 million dollar tax revision bill would be delayed beyond the March 15 filing date for first tax returns.
Los Angeles attorney Richard Cantillon said Hickman could not identify a motive for the killing of the girl. Hickman previously confessed fearing police search of his apartment and dismembered the body to hide evidence, prioritizing ransom money over the child's life amid a long standing personal peculiarity.

Miss Willie Kelly a foreign missionary to the China field arrives in Shanghai after sailing from San Francisco on December 26. She has served in China for years and recently was home on leave. She is a native of South Alabama.
The retrial of the Fall-Sinclair oil conspiracy case was delayed to April 2 amid rumors about Albert B. Fall. Special prosecutor Atlee Pomerene said the government would try Sinclair separately if Fall cannot appear. Fall's counsel warned he may be unable to attend on April 2.
John R. Johnson profiles the Decatur shops in the Louisville and Nashville Employes Magazine. Since 1919 the local shops won the system safety record every year, with 1926 and 1927 showing strong results as accidents per workers declined. The boiler shop led by John K. Walsh achieved a nine month 100 percent safety record.
Representing Eva in Morgan county a 20 car parade toured Decatur after noon to back a 20 million dollar bond issue for schools. Vehicles bore banners such as We want education Give us an equal chance Vote for the Bond Issue Eva and school children rode aboard.
Rev. J. D. McCready of Decatur Baptist church urged all qualified voters to cast ballots on the state school bond issue in Tuesday’s election. He stressed voting your conviction for or against the proposal as a solemn civic duty.
Only one divorce suit was filed in the equity division of Morgan County circuit court during December, per Marvin West, register. This small total contrasts with the usual month average of about six.

Morgan County board of registrars will meet on the second Monday in February to hear citizens in doubt about their qualifications to vote. Those cited must appear and explain why their names should remain on the county list. No removals before the February hearing. New voters may register on January 23 as the board completes preliminary work.
London reports tides ebbing with no recurrence of disaster. Army workmen who battled the Thames rush after Saturday rain remain on alert. Precautions continue through tomorrow's high tides. Damage estimates are not yet accurate but initial reports indicate appalling losses.
Mrs. Mason Hartselle Mrs. J. D. Nelson and two children of Hartselle escaped serious injury when a Ford coupe crossing the Louisville and Nashville tracks near the warehouse was demolished by a train. Witnesses called the escape a near miracle as box cars closed in and the car was crushed against a warehouse platform.
At Burlington station a police ambush killed robbers Valentine Sliwa and John Bonk during a daylight attempt on theater owner E. F. Hulquist’s Sunday receipts. A third robber fled as lead flew. An anonymous tip aided by an assistant state's attorney preceded the confrontation.
In Cullman county a six year old girl, Catherine Wickles, was shot and killed by a fifteen year old relative, Joe Boike, who was handling a double barreled shotgun when it discharged. The children’s parents were away attending a funeral at Welt.
Mr and Mrs Elliott visited Moulton and toured the Lawrence county capital as guests of friends, enjoying their stay and local hospitality.
The Methodist congregation will meet Tuesday night at 8 in the Masonic building. Pastor Rev. Kimbrough says the gathering will decide how to proceed after a recent fine against the church building. He calls it one of the most important meetings in church history.
