Glimpses of a cloudy day with scattered showers in the south and cooler winds. Reports of ill health and hospital admissions across Decatur and nearby towns, plus a fire call, local building permits, and a church meeting scheduled for this week.
Probate Judge and Mrs. T. C. Almon have bought the late Mrs. A. D. Jervis residence at 446 Sherman Street. They plan to move in within days after previously selling their Brook home to Mr. and Mrs. Tom Ed.
Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek declares he resumes the presidency and command of the nationalist forces amid war warnings from Moscow and public opinion. He had retired last year as Li Tsung Jen led the government in exile. Titoism and church tensions surface in Prague and Budapest, while British politics focus on the labor government’s survival as elections loom.
In Monticello Maine a bus carrying 32 children collided with a freight train at Sharp's Siding before 8 A M. Three children died and at least nine were injured. Driver Weldoh Parent age 32 was shaken up. Identified dead include Pamela Davis and Bonnie Flewelling both about 12.
In Birmingham, two youths aged 13 and 14 attempted a wrestling move seen on TV after a match five miles away. One boy struck the other on the neck, causing Bobby Britt to collapse. He was taken home then to a hospital where doctors kept him under observation. his condition was listed as good.
Lawrence McNeil a 37 year old Birmingham insurance man qualified to run against Senator Lister Hill in the U S Senate race pledging to fight for states rights and condemning Hill as allied with a national party. Gordon Persons campaigned in Eufaula on the first helicopter flight of his bid while former Gov Chauncey Sparks watched. 16 more candidates filed for the state democratic executive committee as poll deadlines loomed.
Lawrence McNeil a 37 year old Birmingham insurance man declared his candidacy to challenge incumbent Lister Hill in the May Democratic primaries. He accused Hill of ties to a national socialist Democratic group and urged Alabama voters to repudiate his policies and big government record.
Washington February 28. Deputy Undersecretary John Peurifoy told a Senate appropriations subcommittee that 202 State Department employees were separated while under security review in two years. Ninety one were described as homosexual cases and the department now classifies such persons as poor risks. He also said Alger Hiss is now considered a poor security risk.
Oklahoma City's escaped leopard was captured alive at Lincoln Park Zoo after being drugged with horse meat and restrained by keeper Julian Frazier. The animal, freed from an 18 foot pit, wandered for hours as planes, helicopters, and dogs hunted it before hunger lured it back to its familiar home.
Dayton mechanic Johnny Burnell Garrison was sentenced to 100 years in circuit court for robbing Styles grocery in New Market Madison County. Witnesses identified him in the Dec 16 holdup as he shot a bottle of catsup from a drawn pistol and stole 1400 dollars. FBI agent Robert L. Stowe Jr testified his wallet was recovered and matched by co owner James Styles.
Justice Department lawyers said they had about four or five more witnesses in the contempt case against the United Mine Workers as talks stall. Seizure options and anti trust actions loom amid a nationwide coal famine with strikes spreading and fuel shortages tightening schools hospitals and industries.
G C McRae declares his candidacy for the Morgan County board of education. He lists his Trinity residence, 13 years in the community, three children with two in marriage, four grandchildren, and 49 years old. McRae works in Decatur’s auto business for 25 years and owns a farm west of Trinity. He is a Baptist church member, Mason, Welfare board member, and Trinity school trustee pledging interest in better schools.
Clinton Allen a 21 year old Negro faces trial in recorder court this afternoon on petit larceny charges. He allegedly took 36 dollars from Willie Ray a 45 year old Negro farmer from near Priceville while confined in the city jail. Ray was arrested Sunday for driving while intoxicated.
Nurse Elizabeth Rose testified in Manchester New Hampshire court that Dr Hermann N Sander injected an empty syringe into Mrs Abbie Borreto veins and said the air would act like an embolus and that he would call the undertaker after the injection AP Wirephoto
Reginald Borroto testified that Dr. Hermann N. Sander treated his wife Abbie Borroto with great care during her final illness and that the doctor came to their home often. The testimony supported the defense as Sander faced a first degree murder trial for allegedly ending the cancer patient’s life with an air injection.
John Carnes, 57, of Cullman, was sentenced to three years in the state penitentiary for assault with intent to murder his son in law, John Williams, 33. Judge James H. Crow Jr. chaired the Cullman circuit court after a jury convicted Carnes yesterday.
In Birmingham area incidents last night left George T Williams 29 of Bessemer dead after his motorcycle collided with a car near Pyncore mine 16 miles south. J W Weaver 55 a central park drug store operator suffered life threatening injuries after being struck by a hit and run auto near his store.
PEN CITY Ala Feb 28 Two men Rev Alvin Horn Baptist minister and Klan organizer and Claude J Luker Talladega furniture dealer were arrested following accusations linked to the nighttime killing of Roy Heath whose relatives reported the slain man denounced the Ku Klux Klan Heath died after a raid on his home as he fired at assailants and his son was wounded Authorities seized Lukers car and Horn denied involvement The case ties to Alabama Klan leadership splits and anti masking laws in the mountain Birmingham area.
President Truman will speak from the White House at about 10 54 p m EST for five minutes in support of the American Red Cross fundraiser. The program will also feature a speech by George C Marshall.
