Fair tonight and Sunday with warmer temps in the south and gentle to moderate winds along the coast. Friends report Dr. James L. recuperating at home in Knoxville and expected to return to Decatur in a few days.
Morgan officials press to reclaim Pitts Chapman alias Marvin Wallace, linked to a Decatur swindle that bilked Limestone farmers of 3500. Chapman, held in Missouri after a false extradition delay, faces return once papers are complete. Edgar Ross Quillen received four years for related larcenies.
Cullman Alabama probate judge K J Griffith asked state examiners to review county records after a burglary in the probate office last October amid political rumors. He wrote Chief Examiner Ralph Eagerton urging immediate checks to clarify the situation for county residents.
William J. Lee Jr of Town Creek formally qualified Saturday to run in Alabama Senate district 2, comprising Lawrence and Morgan counties. He faces Dock Richardson and John F. Day. Lee vows to aid farmers, teachers and veterans, back rural electrification, a rural telephone authority, and better roads.
Floyd Ray Kirby of Valley Head dies in a tractor rollover on his grandfather's farm while towing corn. The crash occurred about 10 miles north of Fort Payne. His father John Kirby perished in an overturning car at the same area four years earlier. Survived by mother five brothers and a sister.
Prime Minister Attlee announced after an emergency cabinet session that Labour would carry on with what may be the smallest Commons majority in a century. He sent the decision to King George VI as Britain tackles governance for about 50 million people.
Diplomatic officials say an early meeting between Secretary Acheson and British Foreign Minister Bevin may be called to review US Britain relations and the struggle with Russia after the British election. Talks could expand to include Schuman if German issues loom large.
Excluding the non partisan speaker over 625-seat Commons labor holds 315 seats, conservatives 294, liberals 8, independents 1, Irish nationalists 2. Attlee has a two-vote edge over a bare 313 and faces a strong Conservative challenge. Four districts remain outstanding, three in Scotland and a Manchester division with a March 9 poll due to a candidate’s death. Two districts reported so far.
Two runaway freight cars hit the Southern railway station in Russellville Alabama causing the building to collapse and damage estimated over 15000 dollars. Brakemen failed to stop the cars as they moved along a dead end switch toward the loading platform. The cars rolled into the structure and left walls standing but damaged the waiting room and office. no injuries reported.
Norman W. Harris a Decatur attorney and longtime legislator leaves the field after twelve years of service in both senate and house. He cites desire for more family time and focus on his law practice as reason for retirement. Harris helped craft Morgan County Board of Revenue and played roles in reforms during the Dixon Sparks and Folsom administrations.
Reservations for the Alabama State Baptist Convention are pouring into the Chamber of Commerce office. Bill Sims, manager, says a large attendance is expected. The meeting will be at Central Baptist church on November 14 to 16, with about 1,600 anticipated though not all will require lodging as some will attend day sessions from nearby towns.
Government mediators urged a fast compromise on the soft coal contract before a looming court contempt trial. They pressed United Mine Workers and operators amid fuel shortages and 180000 jobs at risk, warning another week could bring chaos while White House offered no new action. District UMW leaders gathered as weekend contract moves appeared possible.
The Coast Guard Auxiliary answered its first call Saturday when the river bridge draw failed to lower. Bridge tender George W. Smith rode to the north side and an auxiliary motor boat brought the bridge down quickly. Smith had tried to row across but swift water forced him back.
The prosecution in the mercy murder trial of Dr. Herman N. Sander says he acted to spare Abbie Borreto’s husband intense anguish rather than end her pain. Testimony notes Borroto’s plea to “eliminate” his wife’s suffering and the husband’s failing health during caregiving.
Horace Pope, a Cullman cab driver, pled guilty to first degree manslaughter in the 1946 death of Wallace Clyde Dean on Holly Pond road. He also admitted to two counts of forgery and received ten years for manslaughter and two years for each forgery count. Robert Woodard was previously given a life term at a separate trial for Dean's death.
Phillip J. Hamm, candidate for governor, begins a Tennessee Valley tour after qualifying. A spokesman released an itinerary through February 28 and March 1 with stops in Arab Falkville Hartselle Town Creek Courtland Moulton Russellville Red Bay Phil Campbell Haleyville and Double Springs, joined by his band the Hog Scrapers. He is backed by Governor Folsom and recently resigned as state revenue commissioner.
Hildrey Nethery a 21 year old line worker for Western Construction Co. Jackson Tenn. was injured when an A-frame fell from a truck onto his left leg near Lacy Springs at about 3 20 p.m. Friday. He was taken to Decatur General hospital and rested well Saturday night.
An 11 year old Decatur youth Thomas M Hill Jr was critically injured Saturday when a .22 rifle bullet struck him in the head during a hunting accident. The gun was in the hands of a companion and the boy suffered a fractured skull and paralysis on his left side.
With the May primary near, 11 candidates filed for district and county offices. E. G. Hamilton of Decatur moved into a two man race for state representative Place 1. Lawrence county entrants include John H. Day and W. J. Lee Jr. Morgan county sees Darrell Ryan run for one of two board of education seats. Democratic executive board contenders are E. L. Drinkard Falkville W. E. Crawford Decatur Gilbert G. White Belle Mina John A. Caddell Decatur W. J. Price Huntsville and Norman W. Harris Decatur. All but Harris seek re election.
The 60 year old woman was found floating in Lake Martin near Alexander City. Police say she was murdered with three chest wounds and her hands and feet were bound. autopsy to be performed by state examiner from Auburn. The body appeared to have been in the water about three days.
Six Sipsey residents near the Cullman Walker line are scheduled to face trial in Cullman Circuit Court at 9 A M March 2 on two counts of assault with intent to murder. The case stems from an ambush on a Cullman coal truck during last fall’s coal field violence. Police say a gunman stepped into the truck’s path and fired, then the drivers fled and the attackers dispersed. The defendants are James Moore J P Davis James H Stewart Walter Hight Leslie Williams and James A Creel with bonds set at 10000 each. The judge is James H Crow Jr.
Work began Friday on the Sheridan Apartments with the city street department turning the first dirt. Foundations for three store buildings will be laid in ten days to two weeks as the project proceeds. The $216 855 contract funds a 40 two bedroom and 10 one bedroom unit complex of one story frame structures with asbestos siding heated by Hutchinson.
Tuscaloosa's D. O. McClusky was elected president of the Alabama Hospital Association. Gertrude Pratt of Huntsville was named first vice president, J. H. Harden and Sibley from Birmingham became second vice president and secretary, with E. C. Erie as treasurer.
Rev. J. D. Johnston, 82, who retired in 1942 after 36 years in the North Alabama Methodist Conference, died today at his home in Bessemer. He served pastorates in the Florence Huntsville Tuscaloosa and Bessemer districts before retiring.
