The Morgan TM county grand jury reports the county jail is wholly unsafe with old walls easily broken into and escapes possible. They recommend rebuilding and refurnishing the jail portion of the building unless the cost would exceed the constitutional debt limit.
A white Ardmore farmer, Dock Newman, 35, was shot fatally during a dispute near Ardmore. Bonner Anderson, a black man, fled and was being sought by officers across north Alabama and southern Tennessee after the cold blooded murder. Police described Anderson as dangerous. Funeral services were held for Newman today.
Rapid progress reported in Decatur on sanitation under C. L. Parham county health inspector. Many sanitary toilets installed in areas lacking sewers and other improvements completed to upgrade sanitary conditions.
An invitation urged singers to attend a community sing at Ninth Street Methodist Church today at 1 30 p m. The notice invites participants to bring their books and join in the afternoon gathering.
Independent merchants of Decatur Hartselle and nearby areas are invited to a meeting at Decatur city hall on Railroads at seven o'clock. Only home owned institutions should attend. The group aims to study county market conditions and competition with chain stores, marking the first coordinated action by independent merchants.
Miss Susan L. Davis of Athens Alabama writes Secretary of State John Brandon from Washington asking how to file for the Democratic nomination for United States Senate seat now held by J Thomas Heflin. She notes her lifelong Democratic allegiance and that filing deadline supports her consideration. She is sister of Anne Davis deputy state prison inspector.
Local cotton dealers say the ongoing drop in cotton prices will likely reduce cotton acreage more than any action by the Federal farm board. Since the board’s creation prices have fallen to levels not seen in years, and current market conditions point to further declines.
A store meeting held by One-Four-O featured manager Henry Cullom and attendees Morris from Anniston Conner from Sheffield and Hartacle. The discussion covered service and other business features of the company.
The grand jury urges immediate impeachment of W. J. Sparkman Morgan County coroner for alleged intemperance and obscenity. The report submitted to Judge James E. Horton claims Sparkman’s conduct unfits him for office and asks prosecutors to file impeachment actions. Sparkman could not be reached for comment.
Richard H. Jones 35 director of Tidewater Oil Corporation died after leaping from his eighth floor Park Avenue residence. Police termed it self destructive after an assault on his wife with an electric lamp. Mrs Jones, formerly Louise H. Con, received scalp lacerations but remained in her apartment. Jones was Annapolis Naval Academy 1916 graduate and member of several clubs.
Five defendants were before Mayor B L Mal in city court after police arraignments. The brief session outlined charges and next court dates.
Following the Morgan county grand jury report to Judge James E. Horton, deputy sheriffs spent today serving warrants on those indicted for offenses against the peace and dignity of the state. Officials expect to complete the warrant service in a few days.
In Los Angeles area a 16 year old died and a 17 year old girl was blinded after consuming poisoned liquor during a joy ride party in a truck. Four other youths survived while police hunted a 19 year old bootlegger linked to the incident.
Senate lobby committee heard testimony that Claudius Huston, Republican National Committee chair, helped prepare Muscle Shoals planks for 1928 party platforms. Huston led the Tennessee River Improvement Association which opposed government Muscle Shoals operation and backed Cyanamid lease. Witnesses described resolutions drafted with J. W. Worthington and Chester H. Tay and notes of a Tennessee campaign plan for Hoover. Gray feared campaign mentions of Muscle Shoals by both parties, especially the Sern candidate Alfred E.
Information from Montgomery states Prof. C. K. Parker has earned full credentials from the State Board, qualifying him as a candidate for superintendent of education. Also noted is another credentialed figure, Probate Judge M. D. Wood Tait of Joppa Route 1.
Hartselle attorney J Marvin Kelley announced his candidacy for the Alabama state senate representing Morgan and Lawrence counties. He stated opposition to a Morgan county circuit court division and a Hart selle branch courthouse, urged tax reforms, free textbooks, and opposed trusts while calling for better school funding, road building, and harmony in Morgan county. He dismissed the rumor of court division as unfounded and praised using county funds for schools and roads.
Athens Alabama February 25 special The American Legion Post of Athens backs Athens as the site for a new million dollar federal hospital in North Alabama A Legion committee led by Martin F Whitt Thomas B Woodroof and M S Kennemer traveled to Washington to press the case before the hospital location committee Local citizens aid supports the drive and committee members seek approval from Washington to grant the site.
A seventh governor candidate B M Miller of Camden accuses U S senators and most state leaders of Klansman influence and calls for a people centered government. He advocates a graduated tax on chain stores and criticizes 1929 ticket supporters. Other contenders include McCall Fennell Carnley Davis Lee Locke.
McRee, son of long serving county health official Dr. H. McRee, announced for county position in 1930. He graduated from Morgan County High School in Hartselle and moved to Decatur in 1921. He joined Louisville and Nashville railway shops, entered auto business in 1927 with Tennessee Valley Motor Co., becoming head of Alabama Motor Co. in 1929. He serves as vice president of Decatur Junior Chamber of Commerce and has shown active civic involvement.
Probate Judge Jefferson A. Darnley of Coffee County issued an open letter to Edmund W. Pettus urging the State Democratic Executive Committee to reunite and let all Democrats vote in the upcoming primary regardless of past votes. He argued the party must maintain solidarity and correct past mistakes after a 27 to 21 division.
Edmund W. Pettus, Alabama Democratic chairman in Greensboro, states no formal reply will be given to Frederick I. Thompson's request for more time to qualify for the U S Senate. Thompson had announced candidacy subject to the August 12 Democratic primary. Pettus was in Greensboro attending a court session.
Falkville Route 2 resident J Henry Harding noted as a well known citizen was found dead in a local setting. Public curiosity surrounds the circumstances while officials conduct routine inquiries in Falkville.
Washington February 25 A rumor of spies shadowing senators sparked questions after two men were arrested on liquor charges near the senate office building. Senator Watson Indiana Republican leader denied an espionage system and said only Secret Service work on radical elements occurred with no ties to the senators. Senate leaders refused to lend credence to the watch rumor while Sergeant-at-Arms Barry said no extra guards were hired and he did not anticipate further action. Watson indicated he would continue his investigation though he had no plans to disclose details.
The February term County Grand Jury praised Morgan County officials for efficiency and thanked County Solicitor Wade Wright for his cooperation as it neared completing its labors.
