Prague February 21 Eduard Benes departed Lang country home as Czech crisis over communist ambitions deepens. Gottwald fronts mass rally in Old Town Square demanding a new pro communist government and full reorganization of the National Front. Benes and Gottwald confer but no cabinet change occurs.
The United States rejected Russia's protest against the forthcoming three power talks with Britain and France to organize Western Germany's economy. Undersecretary Lovett stated Moscow's stance to be an attempt to shift responsibility for Germany's division and emphasized unity among the four powers for European recovery.
A Decatur couple Johnny Marvin Adams and his German wife welcome their son Johnny Marvin Adams in Germany before returning to Decatur. The veteran, now working at Ralph Pence's service station, and his wife recall their courtship in postwar Germany. Mrs Adams says her first trip to America impressed her, while Mr Adams emphasizes family and future stability.
Swift and Company chose Decatur to distribute ice cream to nine North Alabama counties and possibly two Tennessee counties later. R M McKinnies, a longtime Swift salesman since 1940, leads distribution from 1140 Railroad Street, with ice cream truck visits twice weekly in winter and more in summer.
Fred A. Bennett of Hartselle plans to run for the Morgan County Board of Education seat currently held by W. V. Pattillo who will not seek re election. Bennett is a Stewart and Bennett partner and serves on the Methodist church board of stewards. He previously served as an alderman and as commander of the Hartselle Legion Post.
Arthur Jones announced Saturday that bids will be taken Monday by the board for foundation work in Decatur's new stadium. The board had rejected bids for completion except flood-lighting and fence, with bids of 102000 and 113000 dollars.
When disaster strikes the Morgan County farmer loses home and belongings. Red Cross aims to provide aid to restart living while not replacing all losses. The campaign targets 13 500 to fund penicillin and ambulance trips for the sick.
In Jasper Georgia an 80 year old man Hicks Patterson was charged with slaying his 70 year old brother Edward over a rooster dispute. Sheriff Howard Cagle said the motive centered on a rooster price with Edward reportedly saying he knew who did it but would not tell. Edward died after the attack. Hicks attended Edward's funeral then faced the warrant for the homicide.
Grain prices closed higher with wheat leading advance as the market finished a cautious week. Steel price boosts prompt congressional scrutiny while stockyards show steady cattle and hog values.
Delegates from 5,000 CIO Packinghouse workers across eight Southeastern states approve backing the United Packinghouse Workers of America for a 29 cent an hour wage increase. District 9 director G. R. Hathaway cites proposals from major meat packers as insufficient and notes 98 percent support for a strike if needed. The resolution also seeks price controls rationing veteran benefits and broader reforms.

Backed by the National Congress Of Parents And Teachers, co-authors include Senators Saltonstall and Gordon. Hill says the bill would greatly benefit Alabama public health, especially rural areas.
A secret Senate poll unsettles Southern Democrats as Republicans falter on stopping debate. Dixie senators say Truman anti lynching and anti discrimination laws are a political challenge, while about 50 Southern House members push against the civil rights program with governors Laney and Cherry en route to Washington.
Alabama Attorney General Albert A. Carmichael rejected a claim that size of a club governs wife beating. He stated that beating a wife is illegal regardless of instrument and provides grounds for divorce. The clarification followed remarks by A. P. Borisov at the United Nations.
A revised program for Monday afternoon at three oclock in the Armory honors Purple Heart recipients. Butler P A Hine announced it and the talk will include veteran problems with families. C C Horton will preside, with Alabama veterans affairs officials speaking and the public urged to attend.
Fifty Democratic congressmen from eleven former Confederate states pressed for more allies in opposing President Truman s civil rights program. They planned to present their objections to National Chairman J Howard McGrath while Truman traveled in the Caribbean. Senators Byrd and others advised patience as they consider their next moves, with filibuster as a possible tactic in the Senate.
J Earl Gurley of Falkville qualified as a candidate for tax assessor in Morgan county. He is the only challenger so far against incumbent Dr J T Burch for the office.
